Subject: BAA @ TEA Week 2 (plus Week 3 CM)

Texas won two of three at home vs. the Orioles. This series was brought to you by the number 8 and the letters H and R.

Game 1: TEA 8, BAA 7 (11)

This got ugly in a hurry. Before Orioles starter Sidney Ponson retired a batter, Royce Clayton hit a two-run homer, and Gabe Kapler followed two outs later with an RBI double for a quick 3-0 Texas lead. Wil Cordero got Baltimore on the board with a solo shot in the 2nd. In the 5th, Ivan Rodriguez took Ponson deep for two more runs, But in the 8th, Matt Williams chased Rangers starter Jason Bere with a 3-run homer to bring the Orioles within a run, and reliever John Wetteland served up a two-run gopher ball to Brady Anderson to put Baltimore ahead 6-5. That lead didn't last the inning, as Luis Alicea tied it with a two-out double in the bottom of the frame. Wetteland was still on the mound to give up a go-ahead HR to Cordero in the top of the 11th. In position to get the win, Orioles closer Matt Mantei gave up a single and a walk, then made a lethal two-base error on a bunt attempt that let the Rangers tie the game and set up a walkoff single by Ruben Mateo.

Game 2: TEA 8, BAA 7

Turnabout is fair play: This time it was Baltimore's Roberto Alomar who hit a two-run homer before Texas starter Shane Reynolds recorded an out. But the Rangers weren't any kinder to Curt Schilling, as Rafael Palmeiro took him deep with two out for a 2-2 tie in the 1st. Anderson homered in the 2nd to put the O's back ahead 3-2, but they then loaded the bases with no outs and failed to cash in. In the bottom of the inning, Kapler tied it with another homer and Mike Lamb singled in a run to put Texas ahead 4-3. Clayton added a two-run single in the 4th, and Rusty Greer did likewise in the 5th for an 8-3 lead. In the 6th, Baltimore scored a run on a groundout and another on a double by Julio Lugo, who came home on a Craig Biggio double that cut the lead to -- does this sound familiar? --  8-7. But that was as close as the O's could get. They actually outhit Texas 12-10 but were really hurt by four, count 'em four, double plays.

Game 3: BAA 8, TEA 2

Nobody homered in the first, so the scoring started when Travis Lee doubled in two runs for the Orioles in the 2nd -- and they actually kept the lead through the bottom half of the inning! <sarcastic cheering> In the 5th, Brook Fordyce tripled and Lugo doubled him home to make it 3-0, but Texas pushed across their first run on a groundout in the bottom of the inning. Fordyce delivered a clutch to-out, three-run homer in the 6th, and Cordero added a two-run bomb in the 8th. Greer doubled in a harmless run in the bottom of the 9th.

Seven of the Orioles' eight runs were driven in by the bottom third of the order, while their top 4 batters went a collective 1-for-18.
