Previous message                 Next message Message #: 38195 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Sep 18, 2017 Subject: Reds @ Mets The Reds endure a typical Arena Baseball choke-a-thon in the opener before finally, three weeks into the season, starting to get something resembling the type of pitching the team is capable of....     Game 1: A pair of Cincy reinforcements were called up from the minors for this game, one fared very well and the other very poorly.  Catcher Jason Larue homered and drove in 3 runs in his season debut, but pitcher Rob Bell blew not one but two 4-run leads.  Bell was "aided" by significant sabotage defense including 4 blown x-plays (3 for more than 1 base) and a third run-scoring outfield throwing error on what should have been an easy out.  The Mets defense played down to the Reds' level but it was the Cincy gifts which proved most costly in the 11-9 defeat.  Bell also was not helped by the CIN bullpen (go figure), with the last 3 of Bell's runs scoring after Scott Sullivan took the mound with the bases full and escorted all of the NYN baserunners home safely to turn a lead into a loss.   Game 2: Travis Harper scattered 2 hits in 6 IP, and Scott Williamson tried but barely failed to choke away the Reds' 3-0 lead and settled for a save and a 4-2 win.  The Reds exactly doubled the New York totals in runs, hits (10-5) & LOB (8-4) and socked 5 doubles in the contest.  Moments after the Reds had turned a 1-0 lead into 3-0 before terminating that rally with a timely bases-loaded GIDP in the 8th, Williamson issued a free pass and suffered a gopher bite but had a mostly effective 9th to notch his 4th save.   Game 3: Randy Wolf and Mark Guthrie combined to allow just 6 hits (5 singles) and shut out the Mets by the score of 6-0.  NYN starter Bobby Jones had a solid outing, dodging many bullets (10 hits in 6.2 IP) but permitting only 2 runs.  The Reds took that narrow advantage into the late innings before adding 4 in the 8th against the Mets' bullpen.  Dave McCarty and Craig Paquette provided back-to-back homers in the late outburst, McCarty's pinch-hit blast good for 3 runs.
