Subject: 1999 season ends

In a series played online with interim manager Jon Fellows running the A.L. champs (thanks, Jon!), the Cincinnati Reds completed their 10-2 postseason with a 4-0 sweep of the Boston Red Sox.  The Reds batted .327 as a team and although hitting just 2 home runs managed 20 doubles in the 4 games and had 7 players hit .350 or better in 10+ AB.  Boston's Nomar Garciaparra compiled a .444 average and led his team in nearly all offensive categories, contributing 5 hits (2 homers) and 5 RBI in the game 2 classic (or "debacle", depending on your viewpoint).

Unable to distinguish between all the great hitters, voters selected Pete Harnisch as the series MVP for his 2-0 performance including a complete-game victory in the series clincher.

==============================================================================

Game 1: Boston's Pedro Martinez, who allowed more than 8 hits in a game only once in 1999 (10 vs. KCA) permitted 13 to the Reds in 7 innings, including a shocking amount off his own card (6), and lost to Pete Harnisch by the score of 6-3.  Martinez fanned 11, walked just 1, and 2 of the 6 runs he allowed were unearned.  #8 hitter Pokey Reese had a 4 for 4 day for Cincy, with 3 doubles.  Boston's Troy O'Leary had the only home run.  The Reds decided the contest with a 4-run fourth inning, aided by a Brian Daubach error.

Game 2: Just look at the boxscore.  Boston came back twice in the final innings of regulation, helped by some typical Cincy arson, took a 3-run lead in the 11th helped by some more typical Cincy arson (Sullivan/Williamson with their always timely and entertaining gopher acts).  The Reds got a matching 3 in their half of the 11th when Rich Garces walked in a run and then HBP'd in the tying run with 2 outs.  So Boston got 2 more in the 12th.... and the Reds got 3 with the winning run scoring on a 2-out error by pitcher Roberto Hernandez.

Game 3: Moving to Fenway, the teams combined for 14 runs in the first 4 1/2 innings, then just 1 thereafter.  Boston had a 3-0 lead after 1 inning but the Reds took the lead in the 3rd then immediately allowed a run to tie the score at 5.  Four runs in the 5th sealed the 9-6 win for the visitors.  Of the 25 hits in the game 11 were doubles, 16 of the 18 players had at least 1 hit and 7 CIN batters had more than 1.

Game 4: In the lowest-scoring game of the four, Pete Harnisch tossed a 7-hitter and went the distance in a 5-2 win.  The game was tied 1-1 in the 5th when Cincy catcher Brian Johnson doubled home the 2 runs which proved to be the winning ones.  Two more in the 8th provided some breathing room and enabled Harnisch to survive a Boston marker in the bottom of the frame.  After a leadoff single in the bottom of the 9th, Harnisch retired the last 3 batters in a row including a strikeout of pinch-hitter Mike Stanley on 3 pitches to end the series.
