Subject: Reds @ Padres

The Reds seem to have exhausted their entire season's worth of luck during the first 3 weeks of 2000, with the formerly heavy-hitting Cincy offense turning back into a pumpkin and turning a couple of mediocre San Diego pitchers into apparent Cy Young candidates....

Game 1: Woody Williams and his 6.59 ERA had easily their best outing of the season (7 IP, 8 baserunners, 2 runs) but good as that was it still wasn't sufficient for him to prevail over the Reds -- it required HAL's continuing sabotage of the Cincy defense, featuring 4 blown x-plays out of 5 tries on this day, with 3 of the 4 howlers helpfully going for more than 1 base.  Final score: a 5-4 loss caused precisely by 2 critical unearned runs.  The last unearned run in the 8th became especially important when the Reds got 2 in the 9th to get within one, and had the tying run 90 feet away with 1 out before a pair of adverse split cards resulted in zero baserunner advancement.

Game 2: The Reds jumped on Matt Clement for 3 runs in the 2nd inning (and would score no more today) and Jimmy Haynes immediately gave back 2 of them, what with making his Cincy debut and trying to fit right in.  Fortunately the Padres would do no more damage today either, the final 7 frames being played to a 0-0 tie.  Haynes was assisted by 4 DPs behind him, 3 of the usual variety and one when a runner tried to go from second to third on a flyout.  One swing of Ken Caminiti's bat -- and a decent split card for a change -- was the only thing separating the Reds from being shut out.

Game 3: Which would have made it 2 shutouts in a row for the Padres as the Reds, who had scored less than 3 runs in a game only ONCE in their first 23 contests and never less than 2, made a hero out of somebody named Brian Tollberg who was making his first career appearance.  Nobody could say that Mac Suzuki pitched poorly for the visitors (7 IP, 3 hits, 1 run) but that was exactly 1 run too many and he suffered his 4th defeat in his last 4 starts.  Final score: 1-0, as the Reds, despite getting a late start in 2000, racked up 1-run loss #2 of the series and will surely proceed to accelerate towards our customary leadership in that category.  The Pads managed only 3 hits all day, but jammed 2 of them into the second inning which resulted in the only scoring.
