Subject: Reds @ Expos

The Reds once against struggled massively against a team in the bottom half of the standings, with the formerly effective batting attack -- the only thing the Reds have going in their favor this season, with the pitching & defense being routinely screwed -- limited to just 1 run on two occasions, and losing the only game in which the team scored more than 1....

Game 1: The Reds couldn't buy a break in any facet of the game, and poor Jimmy Haynes "took one for the team" in the 9-1 rout while MON's Aaron Sele had probably the best start of his entire career: 9 IP, 5 hits (with just 1 of those coming after the second inning) 0 BB, 10 K.

Cincy pitchers entered the week being squeezed by home plate umpire HAL for the most walks of any team in the majors by far -- not one other team was even within 10% of the Reds' total -- and although Sele's pitches were nothing but strikes, Haynes was no exception to the usual rule with 5 more free passes today.  Seven of MON's 9 runs scored after 2 outs had been recorded in an inning, CIN batters were 0 for 5 with RISP, and while no split card chance was too low for a MON batter to succeed on, the Reds (for the series) managed TWENTY adverse results in 22 opportunities including a perfect 100% failure rate in 11 chances in the first 2 games.

=========================================================================================

Game 2: Cincy pitchers aren't just screwed when on the mound; they entered this week with what would be an all-time record setting lack of productivity at the plate if it holds up for the entire season.  But Albie Lopez, looking (and failing) to raise his record to 7-0, helped his own cause in the 5th with a successful RBI squeeze bunt that he also beat out for a hit to give the Reds the lead.... moments before giving up yet another surgical split card gopher to erase that lead in the bottom of the frame.

However the Reds battled back to take another 1-run lead into the late innings, then the Arson Squad took over and Scott Sullivan choked up a gopher and a triple to turn that 1-run lead into a 1-run defeat.  Final score: 6-5.  Jose Vidro continued his remarkable season for Montreal, adding new-found power (2 gophers today) to his .400+ average.

=========================================================================================

Game 3: One more surgical split card (Al Martin got the hit on a Si 1-3) of the many the Reds pitching staff suffered in this series was all that separated starter Travis Harper from a no-hitter, so naturally the game was entirely scoreless most of the way, with Harper at substantial risk of losing the game on any pitch.

But the lone other MON baserunner came on an HBP, they never did score, and the Reds' offense finally came to life and eked out a single run in the 7th which enabled the visitors to narrowly avert a very unlikely series sweep by the score of 1-0.  Another 0-fer in 8 chances with RISP by the CIN batters kept the game as close as possible until the big rally came in the 7th, with the run crossing the plate on a 2-out wild pitch; the pressure thus removed, the next batter got a hit anyway.  Arsonist Sullivan relieved Harper after 6 frames and astonishingly tossed 3 perfect innings to lower his ERA almost below 7.0 and he earned his first save of the season.
