Subject: Reds @ Braves

The Braves are a MUCH better team than their record so far would indicate, and they just needed a visit by the Reds to prove it.  The team who had won just 3 of their previous 17 home games turned it around this week in Atlanta against the champion chokers of all time....

Game 1: The Reds had to choke (in the 8th), choke (in the 9th) and choke again (in the 10th) to turn this win into a loss, but barely broke a sweat in accomplishing the task.  Final score: 7-5.  The autopsy revealed that the victim had died from the usual causes: two critical unearned runs, 3 timely DPs hit into including a GIDP with the bases loaded, and 5 late runs allowed by the bullpen which offset a decent outing by Jimmy Haynes.  Haynes permitted just 7 baserunners and 1 earned run in 6 IP while the Reds outhit the Braves and were not terribly fooled by Greg Maddux, who gave up 10 hits in his 7 innings of work.

======================================================================================================

Game 2: Four gift runs in the first inning (3 free passes, 1 timely blown x-play, 1 run-scoring wild pitch) were way more than Tom Glavine required to shut down the luckless Reds in what became a 10-1 rout.  The hit column was much closer than the final score (13-8) and at one point the hits were tied at 7 with the Reds down by a mere 6-1, but as usual home plate ump HAL screwed both the Cincy pitchers and batters (see note below) and there were 7 free passes issued to just 1 received.  Dave McCarty had given the Reds a 1-0 lead with a homer in the first, but things rapidly unraveled from there.

======================================================================================================

Game 3: For the umpteenth week in a row the Reds had to scramble to avoid being swept by a team well behind them in the league standings.  Randy Wolf and Kevin Millwood exchanged zeroes until the 4th, when the Reds got 4 straight hits to start the frame, then 3 straight outs in order to strand the runner at third.  The Braves turned 2 hits and the inevitable free pass into a matching pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but in the 5th Dmitri Young doubled home what proved to be the winning run before the Reds LOBbed the bases loaded.  Five late runs capped by a 3-run homer off the bat of Raul Mondesi vs. ex-Redleg Brett Tomko made it an 8-2 final in a contest which was much closer than that most of the way.

HAL's keen eye behind the plate has the 2000 Reds well on their way to setting a 50+ season record for walk differential, with the pitching staff way out in front in hearing the words "Ball four!" while CIN batters apparently see nothing but strikes from opposing pitchers.  The Reds now have 205 unintentional walks allowed to just 136 drawn in 45 games, on pace for a difference of 248 over 162 games; the league record is 241.

Some analysts feel that a difference of well over 200 walks in a season just might have some impact in a close pennant race, in the unlikely event that the Reds can't find some other way to choke.
