Subject: Reds @ Giants
The reelin' Reds continue to make highly hittable pitchers look like Cy Young while their defense makes the Keystone Cops look like a precision outfit -- but at least the Cincy pitchers (and hitters) can count on being screwed week after week after week by HP ump HAL (free passes issued in these 3 games: CIN - 20, SFN - 5).... Game 1: Two walks and a timely blown-x helped the home team to 4 demoralizing runs in the first inning and the Reds pretty much folded up from there. A surgical split card gopher made it 5-0 in the 6th while the formerly fantastic Cincy offense was still entirely inert, as it has been for at least the past month. Surprisingly, the bats eventually rallied for 4 late runs including a 2-out, 2-run homer in the 9th.... which was just enough to be insufficient. Final score: 5-4. San Fran had numerous chances to make this one a blowout, but the Reds turned 4 DPs to help keep the contest close and make possible the comeback that didn't quite happen. Game 2: The Reds outhit the Giants 7-6 but Randy Wolf suffered a pair of gopher bites that turned out to be fatal, while the Reds helpfully turned around Mark Gardner's season as they had Garrett Stephenson's in the opener. The hit column may have favored the Reds, but the final score (5-1) sure didn't, and wasn't even close. The Reds' scoring began and ended with a Sean Casey double in the first inning, and the defeat was all but sealed up even before comic reliever Scott Williamson committed the team's first balk of the season in the 8th; of course there were 2 outs and a runner on third at the time or it wouldn't have been worth the effort. Game 3: Two free passes (of 8 today squeezed out of CIN starter Jamie Arnold) and a timely 2-base Barry Larkin error gave the Giants their run in the first, then 2 more free passes and a timely throwing error by Raul Mondesi gave them 2 more in the fifth. Aside from that "assistance" from his defense, Arnold was able to keep San Francisco off the board altogether while he helped (with a run scored & RBI) his teammates put 6 up to once again avert a series sweep at the last minute. Though Arnold & Williamson combined on a 5-hitter and both homers today went the Reds' way for a change, the visitors only mustered 1 at bat with RISP to 8 for the home team. Fortunately the teams combined for just 1 hit in those situations. |
