Subject: Sox-Yankees game 1
my turn to tease the opposition with a game by game report.. With Boston basically left in the role of spoiler after dropping 2 of 3 to the Tigers, they went into Yankee Stadium trying to make the last week still meaningful. Game 1. Boston gets going early and runs the bases aggressively. After Andrews popped out, Menke singled and advanced to third on a Yazstremski single, with Yaz advancing on the throw. Reggie Smith then singled and Yaz scored again running aggressively (and to top it off we made both throws, a small miracle in itself). Rico Petrocelli then banged out deep to center and ended up on third by time Roy White could run it down. Stan Bahnsen escaped the rest of the inning by getting Joe Lahoud on a 1-8 roll (would have been a hr for scheduled starter Billy C) and Tony Gonzalez on a fly out. Unfortunately for the Sox that would be all the scoring they would get but not all the action. Boston totaled 13 hits and left 14 men on base in the game. However, Sonny Siebert was flashing his 1968 form today. Siebert allowed a one out homer to Danny Cater in the 2nd and that was pretty much it. Only one other Yankee reached (via a walk) until the 9th inning. Cowan got a lead off double (rolled 5-5) was balked to third and scored on a sac fly. Lindy McDaniel came on to face the lefties and visions of more 4-4 and 4-5 rolls danced in my head. Murcer flew out, WHite singled on a rf(x) split of 2, but Tony C popped out to end the nail biter with the Sox winning 3-2. Boston did all the necessary damage in the 1st inning when they scored 3 runs on 4 hits. That early scoring held up. New York AL made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Siebert(11-10) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Siebert got relief help from Lindy McDaniel who gained credit for his 26th save. Stan Bahnsen(14-15) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. |
