Subject: Reds @ Cubs
When the 2000 schedule was made nobody expected this to be a critical series -- but it was, therefore the Reds came out on the short end despite outplaying the Cubs in all 3 games. The Cubs continued their fantastic good fortune and the Reds continued as the only contending (for now) team in the league which experiences zilch in the way of "Road Field Advantage"..... Game 1: The Reds scored 3 runs (100% earned) through 9 frames and the Cubs scored 3 runs (100% UNearned) through 9 frames, leaving the game unfortunately and undeservedly in the hands of the Cincy Arson Squad, which choked up the game-losing gopher with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th. Final score: 4-3. In the CHN 6th the leadoff man was gifted a 2-base error by the Cincy D, but Albie Lopez retired the next 2 batters before giving up a single and then the surgical dice roll/split card combo which naturally resulted in a 2-out, 3-run gopher. Game 2: Mac Suzuki and Scott Sullivan combined on a 4-hitter while the Reds offense collected 8 hits, but as usual the clutch ones went one way only and that was the deciding factor as the Reds lost close contest #2 of the series, by the count of 2-1. The lone Cincy marker came on a solo homer by Russ Branyan in the 6th, which was unsurprisingly followed by home plate ump HAL coming to our opponent's rescue. Amazingly there were only 2 free passes issued by CIN moundsmen all day -- but they both just happened to occur within the space of 3 batters in the CHN 6th, immediately prior to one more surgical split card which resulted in a bases-clearing triple. Game 3: Finally the Reds began playing in the direction of their talent level, building an early 5-0 lead which was Dave Burba's cue to play "let's see how fast I can choke this away". Pretty darn fast, as it turned out. In the next half inning, three hits were followed by the typical "squeeze" play (walk, walk, RBI walk, all with 2 outs), but Burba eventually got out #3 and had only choked back 4 runs. This proved to be critical as the Reds expanded the wafer-thin lead by a run before giving that one back immediately too before Scott Williamson worked the final three frames to preserve the fragile margin. Final score: 6-5. The hits were 13-7 and total bases 19-8, both in heavy favor of the visitors, but the Reds managed to turn a blowout into another close contest. |
