The Giants went into Fulton-County Stadium and took the final 3 games of a
hard fought series. The first 2 games went a total of 25 innings as the
Braves prevailed in the opener on a 2 out single by Boyer in the 13th giving
them a 2-1 victory. The Giants escaped momentarilly in the 12th as Mike Lum
was gunned out at plate. They threatened to take the lead in the top of 13th
as they loaded the bases only to see PH Dave Marshall go down swinging.

Game 2 saw another pitchers duel as Juan Marichal hooked up with Pat Jarvis.
The Giants scored right off the bat as Bobby Bonds led off with a triple and
he scored on Ron Hunt's SAC fly. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of
the 9th when with 1 out, Hammering Hank Aaron not only ended the shutout but
snatched the win out from Marichal by depositing the ball deep into the left
field stands for the solo homerun. The Ginats retook the lead in the 11th as
Willie Mays singled, stole second and game home on a Willie McCovey single.
Max Alvis then doubled putting runners at 2nd and third with no outs, After
an INT walk, Cecil Upshaw was able to keep Braves in game by recording the
final 3 outs unscathed. This proved crucial as the Braves pulled off a
daring double steal with Sonny Jackson taking home to knot the game at 2 in
the bottom half. In the top of the 12th, Mays drove a liner to center
scoring Hunt with the eventual winning run as the Giants won their 1st game
of season 3-2.

The hitters left that bats at home again in game 3 as Gaylord Perry and Milt
Pappas traded goose eggs for 8 innings. The Giants finally prevailed in the
9th as Jimmy Ray Hart turned on a Pappas fastball for his 1st long one of
year. Perry completed the 4 hit shut-out, striking out 7 to gain the win.
Pappas was the hard luck loser surrendering only 5 hits in 8 1/3.

The bats finally awoke in the series finale with the Giants forging an 8-5
come from behind win. SF struck early again, as Mays doubled home Tommy
Harper in the top of the 1st for an early 1-0 lead. The Braves struck back
immediately with Sonny Jackson and Richie Allen providing RBI singles to give
the Braves a 2-1 lead after one. Deron Johnson led off the 2d with a solo
blast extending the Braves lead to 3-1. The Giants came back with a vengence
in the 5th as McCovey followed up Mays run scoring single with a 3 run moon
shot deep into the stands in right. Hal Lanier put the capper on a 5 run
inning with a single to left, scoring Jesus Alou. The Braves cut into the
lead in the bottom half as Felipe Alou, not to be out done by his brother,
singled home Rick Reichardt making the score 6-4 Giants after 5. Richie
Allen's solo HR in 6th cut the lead to 6-5. The Giants got a pair of
insurance runs in 9th as they parlayed 2 walks, an error and a timely 2 run
single by Jesus Alou to take an 8-5 lead which they were able to hold onto as
Frank Linzy retired the final 3 in order.
