Subject: CHA @ DEA, game 1
No wonder Dave didn't feel like he had time to play in this league... I believe the expression is "One for the books." It was knotted up at one after 9 complete; Pete Ward had led off the second with a solo homer off Mickey Lolich, and Al Kaline answered with a PH homer of his own in the 7th off White Sox starter Joel Horlen. And then, the teams got into each other's bullpens. It was still scoreless into the 13th, when Jim Wynn led off with a single off of Eddie Fisher. After a walk to Ward, Tom McCraw sacrificed them over to second and third. One out later, with first base open, Fisher intentionally walked Duane Josephson, bringing Sandy Alomar to the plate, who responded with a two-run single to right, making the score Sox 3, Tigers 1. But the resilient Tigers came back off of hurler Jim Ray. A walk to Bill Freehan, a single to Jim Northrup, and after a Tony Taylor strikeout, Don Mincher hit a pinch-hit single bringing Freehan home from third. Jim Price followed with another pinch hit single, loading the bases for Dick McAuliffe, who tied the game again with a RBI single. Mickey Stanley was induced to pop up with the bases loaded, and Willie Horton's strikeout ended the Detroit threat in the 13th. Now, it was the Pale Hose's turn to answer, and after Don McMahon retired the first two batters, he walked Wynn. Buddy Bradford (who'd been a defensive replacement after the Sox took the lead in the 13th), singled, and McCraw followed suit, bringing home Wynn. And the Pale Hose faithful who'd made the trek to Michigan & Trumbull felt confident. Somebody forgot to tell the Tigers though, as after Jerry Johnson retired the first two batter, he walked Northrup, leading to a Taylor RBI double. After a Ray Oyler walk (which led to Sox manager Ben Lea nearly swallowing his tongue), Johnson got pinch hitter Dick Tracewski to strike out, sending the game to the 15th, now tied at 4. The Tigers tried to mount a two-out rally in the 15th, but after they loaded the bases off of Johnson, Gary Peters was summoned from the bullpen to strike out Northrup. Detroit again mounted a rally in the 19th, when McAuliffe singled. Stanley moved him over to second with a groundball, and Horton was intentionally walked by Peters, setting up Norm Cash, who ripped a groundball right at Luis Aparicio, who turned the double play and ended that rally. But, after Earl Wilson set down the Pale Hose meekly in the 20th, Freehan led off the home half of the 20th, and sent the Tiger faithful home happy with a solo shot to end the game. Wilson took the win pitching 4 innings of shut-out ball, while Peters was saddled with the loss. Final score: Detroit 5, Chicago 4, in 20. My favorite stat of the night: Bill Melton went 1-for-4, after he being inserted as a pinch hitter in the 13th. I'm going to bed now... I'll play the other two later, and make presumably shorter announcements about them. |
