Subject: Issues at hand
Alan, I wanted to comment on your e-mail regarding trades and home/road records to the list. Consider this food for thought. I might draw some conclusions from what I am about to say...then again, maybe not. I appreciate the fact that you are taking a very "high" road when you say you aren't accusing anyone of cheating. Because I'm not the commissioner of this league I plan on being more direct. I'm sure that honest members will appreciate what I say. Otherwise, if the shoe fits... I would not have won the National League East this year without Luis Aparacio. I obtained him in essence for my number one pick in the upcoming draft. This was a conscious decision to mortgage my future to contend this season. As it turns out, it paid big dividends. Could I have obtained him without picks? Not sure I could have. This is not an argument to allow draft picks to be traded. I understand the dilemmas involved in allowing the trading of picks. So I am somewhat ambivalent on this specific issue except as it pertains to issue number two...the home/road records. Alan, have you considered that "pipeline" deals might be considered by some as playing within the rules? I understand the problems inherent in these type of trades, particularly as they apply to retro leagues like this one so I agree they must be prevented. I suppose that some sort of trade evaluations will have to be made if we cannot trust to have 100% compliance within the spirit of the league. I am going to suggest that you need to take a hard line approach: Make it clear that "pipeline" deals are not allowed and should not even be considered...EVEN if a trade council or trade approval is required. Attempts to make these kind of deals will result in expulsion from the league. I believe this kind of harsh approach is necessary to maintain league integrity. On to home/road records: I am going to suggest that your noble attempts to expose or shame any cheaters into changing their ways as basically futile. You can print out spreadsheets showing trends for the next couple of seasons and I don't believe it will have any effect. Further, I think that looking at these trends in general is a very slippery slope. There are many factors that go into a team's home/road record that will skew the results. I suggest that you take a hard line approach similar to this: You must evaluate any given team before a season starts to have a basic idea how good a team is. Past season performance may be an indicator, but not necessarily so. Any team that you believe is overachieving beyond what is reasonable you must reserve the right as commissioner to expel the manager of that team. I know that this is a heavy responsibility. It will require that you evaluate a team/manager by using several different criteria: Historical road/home records, evidence of game file tampering, out-of-sequence game files, input from other league managers. Keep in mind that the league is not necessarily a democracy and that no one is paying to play. You reserve the right to "kick" any league member you see fit. This can also be done by avoiding the label "cheater". Just say any expulsion is "in the best interest of the league." I find the three solutions you suggested in an attempt to remedy this situation as bad, worse, and worse-than-worse. And I do have compassion for the task you have as I am a former league commissioner. I see online games as a good solution with the one caveat being the ability of league members to find time to play. Varying schedules, time zones, etc. make this extremely difficult. I see auto played games as very distasteful. Frankly, I could run a solo league and get the same results. I actually enjoy playing the games...win or lose. Requiring the above for teams the exceed some home/road differential limit seems too arbitrary. Set the bar too high and it won't make any difference. Set the bar too low and you'll snag some legitimate teams (I believe), or you'll just get the cheaters to play to the limit. You have the same issues with a penalty/reward system...where to set the bar. Well, I think I have rambled on enough. I vote for tough enforcement and league expulsion. Circumstantial evidence is enough. Let's don't let one or two individuals ruin what is otherwise a fun and well-run league. Finally, I offer all the above as "one man's opinion." I did not consult any other league member before I typed the above. Sincerely, Steve Bivens |
