Subject: Re: [SmileyList] Issues at hand

Maybe I am missing something here... Here you have the Expos that were historically a poor team until the 80's. Steve made a deal that mortgaged a little of his future (or a lot) to make a run at the playoffs and actually made it. But by restricting trading draft picks, the Expos probably would have had little chance to pull off a deal that put them in the playoffs without creating another hole that would have prevented this.
So my question is, what tools do the weak teams have to try and make runs at the playoffs? Or, in the Expos case, they pretty much have to sit around until the MLB Expos finally get good? Another example wouldbe the Padres... Their best asset to make a playoff run is their future draft picks. But by cutting that off that is a big hurdle to overcome.
If the object of Smiley is to pretty much replicate what actually happened in MLB then we might as well just take the actual rosters of MLB teams each year and replay the seasons. I feel fortunate that my Dodgers didn't have long droughts of ineptness (though some might argue we are in one currently) but lets give teams that are historically near the bottom some chance to compete occasionally.
I would even think going the opopsite way would be better for the weaker teams. I would actually like to see teams able to deal picks for the coming draft as well as the one following it. Sure, they might mortgage a few years but at least the complete deals would be out in the table for everyone to see. I guess I don't see a team trying to improve themselves (be it during the current year or the next year or the year after) being a bad thing for a league. What I see being bad for a Retro league is a franchise that is bad year after year because of the limitations the league has put in place. From my experience, when I have seen this it usually leads to constant turnover of management for the weak
Just my .02 which probably doesn't properly represent the league opinion since I am typically in the minority on Smiley issues (inter-league play for example)!

But here in lies the problem...By trading your #1, (or basically nothing this
year) you got a player that helped you contend. Luckily you won the division. If
you hadn't, you still would have had one of the top records in the league, thus
dropping the value of that #1. Everyone can see that 71 is not a very deep draft
and your #19 overall spot isn't going to be a player that was as helpful to they
White Sox as Aparicio was to the Expos. At best, if you fell short of the
playoffs, your pick is probably in the 14-15 range and still not as valuable as
what you got...

In a retro league the value of a pick is known in advance since you know that
players future before you pick him. In a current league, at least there is the
element of chance on how that player turns out. Is taking Pujols,Dunn and Oswalt
at the top of a 2001 draft  the right thing to do? Only time will tell.Is taking
Luzinski and JR RIchard at the top of this draft the right thing to
do..Absolutely as you know how they turn out.

Lets look at it this way. In 1973 would you have used a #1 pick on Mike Schmidt
and his 34 ab's and .206 average..Will someone do it next year in our draft?
Most certainly...
