First, let me apologize to those who've heard this story before. It remains one of the treasured memories of my life, though, so I'm gonna tell it again. (If you have heard this story, you know who I'm picking,so feel free to delete it!)
When I was about 7 years old, my grandparents took me to my first baseball game. The Phillies were in Atlanta (which was about 300 miles from home -- an *amazing* trip for a 7 year old!). Now, you may or may not know that I've never been small;I'm 6'3" or so, and I'm in the best shape of my life right now, but I still weigh about 275 or so. (In all seriousness, it was once a *lot* more than that.)
Anyway, the Phillies won, 4-2, when their huge leftfielder (built like me!) hit a 3-run shot in the 7th. You understand? He was built like me! I could play too! You didn't have to be thin and muscular to be an athlete -- I could dream! Needless to say, I had me a new hero. Got the poster, got the baseball cards, got the spring training hat autographed, got the autographed baseball.
Then, after the 1980 season, the Phils figured they'd had enough of him, so they released him, and the White Sox grabbed him up quickly. And thus, did my allegiance change from Philly to Chicago, which is why I'm running these Sox today.
With the first pick in the draft, the White Sox are thrilled beyond words to select Greg Luzinski, 1B/OF/Hero, Philadelphia.
