Subject: Thoughts from Minnesota
As my home computer is currently down, I just read all the stuff sent out on Sunday about trading and road v. home records. I have nothing to really say about trading at this time. As far as road v. home and the discussion in this league, I have a few things to say... First of all, whether it is ment to or not, the discussion, with the exception of Scott from LA seems to suggest that the Twins by virture of playing .400 ball at home in the SMILEY 1970 season, should have finished that season with an overall .400 record. That be would a record of 64 and 98 for a team that was 98 and 64 in real life! The SMILEY Twins had .700 record on the road - which is closer to their real record than their home record. In 1969, the SMILEY Twins had a much more balanced record. I expect that in 1971 and on, the SMILEY Twins will have a more balanced record. Yet it seems that looking at this particular issue over the long term is not what is happenning now, as Alan sees a need to deal with it now with possible proposals. I would personally expect most players who have a good team - as I did this past SMILEY season, to do well against HAL. Thus, have a good road record. I would also expect - with exceptions - those same good teams to do well with HAL at the helm. I had one of those exceptions in 1970. It is interesting to note, that 1970 SMLIEY Twins - a team with a lot of good talent by strat standards - lost an unexpected number of games at home to bottom division teams. This will happen once in a while in a sim game that is diced based. Thus, I had a lousy home record with a good team. I would disagree that it should logically follow that just because a good strat team has an unexpectedly bad season at home - where HAL is the manager - that this same good strat team should have a bad record on the road when managed by a human. But, this seems to be the theme of the discussion. In short, it would seem to me that at least one member of SMILEY has questioned whether or not the record of at least the Minnesota Twins - and possibly others - in 1970 is in fact, legitimate. I would rather confront this in a more open and direct manner. Therefore, if anyone in this league thinks someone is cheating - let's deal with it directly. This league has a really good concept and set up. It should not be changed to try and deal with a preception or undertone of cheating. It is clear that someone(s) thinks someone(s) is being less than honest in the playing of their games. If any of you think I am doing this. I would appreciate an e-mail to me at ramacier@... to that effect so we can discuss it directly. Alan, I oppose all of the options you have proposed. If the league really thinks this is problem, then maybe those owner(s) that other owner(s) think are untrustworthy need to depart. If that includes me so be it. No one should have to be a in league with people who they don't trust. By the same token, if one or some of us are not trusted, why would we bother? As I have said earlier, I think this is a great league with a great concept. I think the people in it are all honest players. But clearly not all of us feel that way about each other. One final thing: I have played enough strat and have taken enough statistical courses to know that using one season such as 1970 to say their is a road home problem such has been suggested simply can't be founded. But, now that the spector of cheating has been raised, it will be hard to put it back in the bottle, and full trust will hard to get back too. Hoepfully we will all find a way to move on and out this behind us. Rick |
