The homestanding Minnesota Twins came from (slightly) behind to defeat the New York Yankees by the score of 6-3 in game one of the 1970 American League Championship Series. On a cool Minneapolis Saturday, 47,076 fans packed Metropolitan Stadium to see Fritz Peterson (23-6 in the regular season) oppose Jim Perry (22-8). If those fans expected a pitchers duel, they were almost immediately disappointed. Jim Fregosi led off the series with a single and advanced to second when Roy White drew a 1-out walk. But Rod Carew, known somewhat more for his stick than his glove, made an excellent stab of a tricky X-grounder and turned it into an inning-ending double play. Peterson allowed the first three Minnesota batters to reach base in the bottom of the first, Tony Oliva scoring Cesar Tovar from second with a single, but the Yanks turned a DP of their own to end the rally. The top 3 hitters in the Twins' lineup - Tovar-Carew-Oliva - would wind up this day an incredible 10 for 14! New York bounced back in the second when Jake Gibbs led off the frame with a home run, and took a 2-1 lead in the third when Jim Lyttle doubled and a clutch Gibbs single plated him. But Jim Perry, a good hitter for a pitcher, led off the Minnesota third with a single off his own card, and the next three batters also singled; Oliva's hit with the bases loaded drove home two, and gave the Twins the lead for good. Later in the inning, Brant Alyea was walked intentionally with two outs, but Leo Cardenas delivered a base hit that upped the lead to 4-2. Minnesota kept the heat on: Tovar doubled with one out in the fifth, and Danny Cater at third base misplayed Rod Carew's line drive into a single + error. Tony Oliva then drove a single under first baseman Pete Ward's glove, after which the score was 6-2. Ron Klimkowski raced in from the bullpen and extinguished the fire, but only a seventh-inning Jim Lyttle single would drive home another run on this day, and the final was 6-3. The starting pitchers combined to allow 18 hits in 10 IP, but the bullpens were perfect for both teams, allowing no runs in 8 innings. Ted Abernathy got the hold, and Stan Williams the save. New York threatened in the ninth when Horace Clarke led off with a double, but Williams got the next three hitters to fly out to end the game.
