And a very exciting game it was! As Park Jarry remains under permanent construction (until such time as somebody finds a workable background for it), 48.980 fans packed Yankee Stadium to see the Montreal Expos host the San Francisco Giants. Gaylord Perry (23-9) was on the hill for the visitors, and Steve Hargan (8-6) took the ball for the home team. The playoff-tested Giants wasted no time in jumping on the upstart Expos: in the top of the first inning Bobby Bonds singled and advanced to second when Bob Bailey flubbed Willie Mays' grounder. Hargan pitched carefully to Willie McCovey and walked him, loading the bases with one out for Rico Carty. Rico delivered a 2-run single to give San Fran the 2-0 lead that it would hold for most of the game. The Expos threatened briefly in the second when Ted Uhlaender drew a two-out walk and was doubled to third by Gary Sutherland. Unfortunately for the Expos, Steve Hargan was next up at bat, and he flew out to end the inning. Bob Bailey led off the fourth with a double, but Fairly-Fosse-Uhlaender never moved him an inch. San Francisco almost extended their lead in the sixth: with two outs and Rico Carty on first, Dick Dietz laced a double into the center field gap, but the slow-footed Carty was easily gunned at the plate, keeping the score at 2-0. Montreal finally dented the scoreboard in the seventh, taking the lead in the process as the Giants' defense fell apart: Ted Uhlaender led off with a single and moved to second when Willie McCovey butchered pinch-hitter Mack Jones' ground ball. After Dalton Jones (another pinch-hitter) struck out, Alex Johnson put the 'spos on the board with a single that sent Jones racing to third. With Luis Aparicio at the plate, Dick Dietz let a Gaylord Perry greaseball (OK, "alleged" greaseball) get past him, plating Jones with the tying run and allowing Johnson to move up to second. Aparicio dropped a single into center, Johnson advancing to third. Staub moved Looie up to second on a groundout (Johnson holding at third), and Bailey drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Ron Fairly stepped in and watched with delight as another greaseball found its way to the backstop! Fairly did nothing more at the plate, and the inning came to a close with the Expos now leading by the score of 3-2. The Expos made some changes in the field, and brought Howie Reed in to pitch. Reed struck out Billy Grabarkewitz to open the San Fran eighth, but Willie Mays lined a single, and brought Willie McCovey to the plate. Reed apparently missed the pre-game meeting where it must have been discussed how to handle Mr. McCovey in this situation. Just as Dick Dietz was being fitted for the goat horns, Big Mac bailed him out big-time by walloping a 2-run shot deep over the left field fence! 4-3, Giants now. Defensive replacement Adolfo Phillips fanned with two runners on in the Montreal eighth, and the Giants partied in the ninth when Willie Mays smacked a 3-run bomb off reliever Mike Marshall. With the score now 7-3, Moe Drabowsky spelled Perry on the mound, striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth after Aparicio led off with a scratch single. Montreal outhit the visitors by the count of 10-8, but Dick Dietz turned out to really be the only clutch run producer for the Expos, as Montreal out-LOBbed San Francisco by 11-6.
