If you thought NLCS game 1 was exciting, you haven't seen nothing yet..... The Yankees and Twins hooked up on a Minnesota Sunday for game two of their series. The Twins took game one thanks to their 1-2-3 punch of Tovar-Carew-Oliva. For game two, the Bronx Bombers sent Mel Stottlemyre (18-11) to the mound against Fergie Jenkins (21-12). It would be yet another non-pitchers' duel. Fergie spent most of the day pitching like an Cub again (sorry, Alan :-), and it began in the top of the first when Cesar Tovar let Jim Lyttle's blooper drop in front of him for a single, and Jim Fregosi immediately followed with a double over Tovar's head. Lyttle beat the throw to the plate, and Fregosi sprinted to third in the meantime. Jake Gibbs sent a one-out grounder to Leo Cardenas, who was playing too deep at shortstop, and the second run scored as the only play was at first. Minnesota came back with a run in their half of the first when Tovar was nailed by a Stottlemyre fastball, took second on Rod Carew's bunt, and scored on Harmon Killebrew's two-out single. Danny Cater reached third base with nobody out in the New York second, but never budged. The Twins took the lead in their second when Brant Alyea led off with a base hit, moved to third on a Cardenas double, and both runners crossed the dish on George Mitterwald's single, all before anyone was out in the inning. With the score 3-2 in favor of the home team, the Yanks stormed back in the fourth as Leo Cardenas met the ghost of Dick Dietz (see NLCS game 1). Cardenas fielded leadoff hitter Roy White's slow grounder and hurled it to a fan in the 15th row behind first base. Danny Cater followed with a ringing double to tie the game, and Pete Ward converted a HR 1-2, 2B 3-20 into a 2-run shot and a 5-3 New York lead. Horace Clarke then trickled one under Cardenas' glove for Leo's second blown X-play of the inning, but no further damage occurred. The Yankees extended the lead to 6-3 in the fifth when ex-Mississippi quarterback Jake Gibbs smashed a liner into the gap, and watched Jim Fregosi score as Gibbs hustled into third base with a stand-up triple. Roy White grounded sharply to shortstop, and Gibbs tried to bowl over George Mitterwald, but this time Cardenas made a good throw, and the QB didn't make it to the end zone. The Twins cut the lead back to two runs in their fifth thanks to a single-walk-single after two were out and nobody on, Donn Clendenon delivering Tony Oliva from second. The sixth, seventh & eighth innings passed with few baserunners for either team, and the score remained 6-4 into the ninth, when finally both starting pitchers would hit the showers. Jenkins began the ninth weakly, allowing a Horace Clarke single and stolen base, and pinch-hitter Tony Conigliaro singled Clarke to third. Tom Hall relieved the gassed Jenkins, struck out the first two batters he faced, and got Bobby Murcer to ground to Cardenas to complete the bail-out. Surprisingly, the Yankees summoned Joe Gibbon instead of Ken Tatum from the bullpen to close out the game. Pinch-hitter Bob Allison hit what appeared to be a routine grounder to Danny Cater, and the third sacker picked a bad time to commit the first Yankee error of the day. Now Tatum entered the contest, and Cesar Tovar popped out to Jim Fregosi. With lefty batter Rod Carew coming up, HAL played the percentages and brought lefty reliever Sparky Lyle to the mound. Carew greeted Lyle with a double, and Allison checked in at third base. Sparky worked carefully to Tony Oliva, walking him on 4 pitches. Tom Dukes was hastily called in to face big Harmon Killebrew with the game on the line. Four pitches later, none of which Killer deemed worthy of offering at, the score was 6-5 and the bases were still loaded. Donn Clendenon came up next, and Dukes had nowhere to put him. The duel went back and forth until the count was full, and on the sixth pitch of the at-bat Dukes grooved one down the middle and Donn drove it out of the park for a game-ending Grand Slam! The crowd, as you might imagine, went nuts. (HAL refused to answer when asked repeatedly why he failed to leave Ken Tatum in the game. HAL pointed out that Tatum had not been pitching well for over a month, his ERA having ballooned from 1.58 on August 3rd to 2.96 at the end of the season, and the fact that he was 1-2 with only 3 saves in his last 14 appearances of 1970, AND Tom Dukes held lefties to a .177 batting average this year, while they hit .245 off Tatum.) Minnesota came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Clendenon who made the Minnesota fans a happy lot when he electrified the crowd with a Grand Slam home run (his 1st of the season). Minnesota finished with 11 hits in the victory. Tom Hall(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Sparky Lyle(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. 'That was exciting!,' Clendenon said. 'I would have paid money to watch this one.'
