Subject: NLCS game 2

On a "lousy day for baseball" in "Montreal", Clyde Wright (24-4) took the mound for the Giants against Barry Lersch (11-3), with the Expos looking to avoid going down two games to none and having to head to San Francisco for the remainder of the series.

The Giants took the lead in the first inning: after Bobby Bonds led off with a walk and stole second base, he moved to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout.  Montreal came right back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the split cards kept the Expos from doing much more significant damage.  It started well for the home team when Luis Aparicio drew a split of 1 on a 2B 1, SI 2-20.  After being wild-pitched to third, Rusty Staub rolled a HR 1-19, 2B 20 - and got the 20, tying the game at 1 with his double.

A Tito Fuentes error put runners at first & third with two outs, when Alex Johnson rolled a SI 1-18, lo 19-20 - and got the 19.

San Francisco took the lead in the third thanks to a two-out, two-run double by Big Mac, but the Expos answered when Bob Bailey doubled in Adolfo Phillips, cutting the Giants lead to 3-2.  An inning later, another double (by Aparicio) plated a runner, and the contest was tied at three.

The runs that would decide the game scored in the Montreal fifth, on a "strange play".  With Ray Fosse on second, Alex Johnson on first and one out, Ron Fairly rolled an X-play to Tito Fuentes.  The play was the one where the runner (Fairly) rounds first base too far after a single and gets nailed, but both runners scored on the play!

The Giants seriously threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs.  HAL pulled a double switch, bringing in Gary Sutherland to play second and Mike Marshall (who was treated roughly in game one) to pitch.  Down by two runs, Clyde Wright was due up, and HAL (the other HAL) allowed him to bat, but he grounded to Sutherland to end the inning.

San Fran would get only one baserunner after that (a McCovey walk leading off the eighth).  Jack Aker shut things down in the ninth for his first postseason save, and Clyde Wright ended up going the distance in defeat.
