The 1970 American League Championship Series is over, having ended in another heartbreaking ninth-inning loss for the New York Yankees. The Minnesota Twins, defeated by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1969 ALCS, advance to the World Series to meet the winner of the Expos-Giants series, which is currently tied 1-1. Congratulations to the Twins on reaching the W.S., and to the Yankees as well for their successful 1970 season. We finally had a game that was not dominated by the batters, as Ken Holtzman and Stan Bahnsen kept the opposing hitters off balance for most of the day. Brant Alyea's solo home run in the second inning held up until the Yankees were able to push across the tying run in the sixth when pinch-hitter Billy Cowan led off with a double and was singled home by Horace Clarke. It all broke open in the ninth again, but the Yanks caught a break when rag-armed Roy White recorded the first out by gunning down Brant Alyea, who was trying to score from second on Leo Cardenas' single. Cardenas raced to second on White's throw, but was unable to advance when George Mitterwald grounded to Jim Fregosi. Needing only one more out, and with the game still knotted at one, HAL summoned Steve Hamilton to face pitcher Tom Hall. Rick Renick stepped up to pinch-hit, and Hamilton worked too carefully, losing Renick on a walk. Cesar Tovar, in a mini-slump since game 1, rapped a single to left, and this time White could not come up with the big throw. Cardenas scored and the other runners took liberties, moving up a base on the throw. Rod Carew, probably the MVP of the series, was intentionally walked, but Tony Oliva ruined the strategy with a 2-run single, putting the game out of reach. John Cumberland got Harmon Killebrew to end the misery, but Stan Williams mowed down the side in the ninth after a leadoff walk to Tony Conigliaro, and the champagne flowed in the Minnesota clubhouse. Minnesota had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Alyea started the inning off right when he doubled. Leo Cardenas followed and he laced a single. Cardenas took second on the throw. After an out was recorded, Rick Renick stepped in and he drew a walk. Cesar Tovar was up next and he stroked a base-hit scoring a run. Tovar took second on the throw. Rod Carew stepped into the box and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Tony Oliva added to the rally and banged out a single as another two runners scored. Oliva took second on the throw. New York AL was out-hit by Minnesota, 10 hits to 5. Tom Hall(2-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Hall got help from Stan Williams who earned his 2nd save. Ron Klimkowski(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
