The Boston Red Sox nipped the New York AL Yankees in 14 innings 2 to 1 at
Fenway Park in a hard fought contest.

The score was knotted at zero after nine innings.  Boston won the game in the
14th inning.  After an out was recorded, Marty Martinez tripled.  Reggie
Smith came next and he lined a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for
Boston and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.  Overall
Boston out-hit New York AL 14 to 7.

The winning pitcher was Jose Santiago(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Bill Monbouquette(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.

Horace Clarke had 2 base hits as the New York AL Yankees staged a dramatic
comeback over the Boston Red Sox by a score of 9 to 6 at Fenway Park.

New York AL had the winning rally in the 9th inning when they scored 4 runs on
4 hits.  This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed
hands 5 times.

Steve Hamilton(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. John Wyatt(0-1) was the loser in relief.  It was a tough
loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.

After the game, it took a long while before Tom Austad emerged from his
office.  In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions.  He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this
afternoon, as I think you'll understand.  I'm sure you'll find the banter a
lot more light-hearted over in the New York AL locker room.'

Tony Gonzalez had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Fenway Park where the Boston Red Sox
beat the New York AL Yankees by the score of 8 to 5.

It was a good day for Boston thanks to Gonzalez.  He lined a one-base hit in
the 1st inning, tripled in the 5th inning, laced a single which scored a run
in the 6th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 1st of the
season) in the 8th inning.  John Wyatt pitched a perfect ninth and was
credited with his 1st save.

The winning pitcher was Gary Bell(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 5 innings. Al
Downing(0-1) was given the loss.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 12 hits and
1 walk.
