Subject: NLCS game 3

If this was a fight, it would have been stopped in the second round.

The San Francisco Giants stomped the Montreal Expos by the score of 11-2 at Candlestick Park, taking a 2 games to 1 lead in the process.  Despite a pep talk from his manager prior to the game, Carl Morton (16-10) was not up to the task of facing the powerful San Francisco lineup.  Bill Singer (6-3) was given a heavy dose of run support early, and cruised from then on.

The day started well enough for the visitors when Rusty Staub launched a solo shot over the right-center field wall in the first inning.  But the Giants opened up the floodgates immediately thereafter.  Bobby Bonds led off with a single and stole second base, and Billy Grabarkewitz got all of a Morton fastball, driving it 400+ feet over the centerfield fence.  The rattled Morton wasted no time in allowing the next batter, Willie Mays, to do the same, and the Expos were suddenly down 3-1.  And it would get a lot worse very quickly.

The next five batters after Mays reached base, and only a Bill Singer double-play groundout limited the damage to one more run.  After the 'spos went down in order in the second, Bobby Bonds again singled to lead off an inning, Grabarkewitz & Mays walked, and the bases were loaded for Willie McCovey.

The Expos dugout couldn't bear to watch as Big Mac swung mightily - and popped out to catcher Ray Fosse.  Whatever shred of confidence Morton gained from that was shattered seconds later when Rico Carty delivered a grand slam to leftfield, making the score 8-1, and finally sending the shaken pitcher to the showers.

About the only action seen after that point was a brief shouting match between the opposing managers after Bobby Bonds stole second base in the seventh inning with the score 11-2.

Steve Hargan is scheduled to start game 4 tomorrow, as the Expos try to stay alive against Gaylord Perry, who will be looking to wrap up the 1970 NLCS for the home team.
