Ho, hum. Just another routine playoff game........ With Steve Hargan's arm not quite up to the task of starting game four, the Expos turned to untested Steve Renko (14-13) to try to stay alive in the NLCS. Gaylord Perry, who was not in top form when he started game one for the Giants, looked refreshed as he took the mound on this sunny fall day. Although the Montreal partisans were fearful of another Morton-type meltdown from their young hurler, it was Perry who had trouble early. With two outs in the first and Luis Aparicio on first base, Bob Bailey drove a liner into the gap for an RBI double and was singled home by Ron Fairly, giving the visitors a quick 2-0 lead. Two batters into the bottom of the first, however, and the score was 2-1. Bobby Bonds led off with a double, and Billy Grabarkewitz plated him with a single. In the second inning, the Expos extended their lead by a run when Ted Uhlaender scored on Alex Johnson's two-out single. Renko hit some minor turbulence in the San Francisco sixth when three of the first four batters reached base, Grabarkewitz scoring on Rico Carty's single, which sent Willie McCovey to second. Unwilling to push Renko's luck any further, the Expos turned to Mike Marshall, who had been pitching well since a game one drubbing. Marshall fanned Dick Dietz, and Willie McCovey was retired at home to end the inning on a bullet throw from Rusty Staub following Tito Fuentes' base hit. Perhaps already planning for game 5, HAL brought Skip Pitlock to the mound for the Giants after Perry was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh. Sure enough, the game got out of hand in no time: Rusty Staub worked Pitlock for a base on balls, and both Bob Bailey and Ron Fairly followed with long home runs off Pitlock's card, making the score 6-2 and sending many of the San Fran faithful to the parking lot, griping about the decision to being in a reliever who sported a 6.32 ERA (and lots of gopher balls) in the regular season. Pitlock did manage to retire the side without help from the bullpen, but the Giants couldn't take advantage of the 3 baserunners they received off Marshall in their eighth, because Rusty Staub AGAIN nailed a runner (Mays) at the plate on Dietz's two-out single. Pitlock remained out there for the Expos to take B.P. off of in the ninth, and Montreal did get a couple of singles, but no more runs. Relief ace Jack Aker strode confidently to the hill in place of Marshall to get the last three outs and send the series to game 5, but suffice it to say there would be a little bit of drama before that would happen. Aker began inauspiciously by walking Tito Fuentes. Hal Lanier's checked swing dribbler was misplayed by Ray Fosse, and all runners were safe. Bob Taylor batted for Pitlock and lifted a short fly ball to center field for out #1. Bobby Bonds showed uncharacteristic restraint at the plate, and worked Aker for a walk to load the bases. Billy Grabarkewitz did the same, and the suddenly-wild Aker had walked in a run, making the score 6-3 and leaving the bases loaded for Willie Mays. Mays smacked a liner to left, but Alex Johnson had him played perfectly, and the error-prone fielder didn't fluff this one. Down to the final out, Willie McCovey stepped in, and the roll was a 2-9. Anyone who is familiar with Mac's card knows what that means: Grand slam, game over, series over, Giants advance to the World Series to meet the Twins! McCovey batted barely over .200 for the series, but surely his blast will remain a memorable one. All five ninth inning runs were unearned. Both of the 1970 World Series participants paid their dues by losing in the 1969 playoffs; perhaps the Yankees & Expos will match up next year? San Francisco came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning as they scored 5 runs on 1 base hits. The big moment was provided by Willie McCovey who excited the crowd when he hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates (his 2nd of the season). San Francisco rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon. Skip Pitlock(1-0) got the win allowing 3 runs in 2 innings. Jack Aker(0-1) took the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered 1 hit and 3 walks. 'We just wouldn't give up,' Billy Grabarkewitz said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole way.'
