Subject: World Series game 1

46,000 + braved the winds of candlestick to see the Perry Brothers match
up in game 1 of the World Series. Unfortunately for the Giant faithful,
Jim got the better of Gaylord this day.

The spitter was not working early as Gaylord hit the 2nd batter Rod
Carew and then walked Tony Oliva on 5 pitches before recovering to get
the next two batters. In the 2nd, he wasn't so fortunate. With 2 out
George Mitterwald singled and moved to 3rd on successive wild pitches
(one off a catcher-x). Jim Perry then laced a single to right to bring
in the first run of the game.

The Giants bounced right back. Willie McCoy led off with a single on
aball that Rod Carew just couldn't reach. Dick Dietz drew a one out walk
and then with 2 outs, Hal Lanier singled to center. Cesar Tovar charged
the ball and came up throwing. Too bad he didn't aim his throw as it got
past the catcher allow Big Mac to score and the other runners to move
up. Gaylord struck out to end the threat.

In the 3rd, Oliva reached on a one out single and Harmon Killebrew got
hold of a Perry spitter. However the wind got just enough of this one to
keep it in the park (hr 1-5 split was 7) and the game remained tied. In
the 4th, Gaylord again had some problems. Brent Alyea led off with a
single was bunted to second and scored when Gaylord threw away the
comebacker off the bat of Jim Perry for what turned out to be the
winning run.

There was only one serious scoring threat in the next few innings.
Minnesota loaded the bases in the sixth and Jim Perry came to bat.
Having already produced 2 runs, you would think management would let him
swing away, but Perry tried a squeeze and the runner on 3rd was an easy
out on the force. Tovar then struck out to end the threat.

Gaylord was replaced in the 8th with Skip Pitlock and he was rudely
greeted by the Twins hitters.Donn Clendenon led off with a single and
the next batter, Brent Alyea, launched one over the wall to provide the
final runs of the game. Ron Perranowski came on and retired the last 6
Giants in order to seal the 4-1 win..
