Subject: Cubs @ Giants
In this series, Chicago's offensive scoresheet primarily featured GIDP and LOB, but also several HR. That, plus a couple of narrowly-averted bullpen chokes and a handful of timely OF assists enabled the Cubs to take 3 of 4 from a far-superior San Francisco club.... Game 1: Camilo Pascual pitched between the raindrops, successfully scattering 9 hits, and the Cubs eventually got to Billy Pierce for 3 gopher balls, which was good enough for a 4-1 win. Game 2: Chuck Estrada continues to get "no love" from the dice or split cards, and the Giants turned an early 4-0 lead into an easy 5-2 win behind the moundwork of Hank Aguirre. Game 3: Juan Marichal did most of the damage today - for both teams. He went 3 for 3 at the plate with a pair of doubles & 3 RBI, but also allowed 15 baserunners (9 singles, 6 walks) in his complete-game effort. The Cubs put together 5 of those singles in a 4-run fifth, then barely held on for a 5-4 win. San Fran collected 4 singles in the ninth off of the Chicago Arson Squad, but only managed 1 run thanks to a runner being gunned at the plate. Game 4: Ernie Banks launched two more homers (he had 4 in the series) and Vada Pinson notched 5 RBI, but the Cubs had to withstand a 3-run near-choke in the late innings to win by the score of 7-6. Once again, the would-be tying run for the Giants was gunned down at the plate - TWICE in the final two frames. Those 3 fortunate split cards in the last 2 games were all that separated a 3-1 series from a 1-3 series; once a tying run scores in the late innings against the Cubbie pen, the losing run always follows.
