Subject: Minnesota @ Oakland

The Twins coming off a solid home opening series with Kansas City, go out to play the emerging power house Oakland A's as the defense of their 1970 title begins in earnest. Both owners made several attempts to play "live" over netplay. But alas, real life got in the way.

Game One

37,563 (no sellout) showed up for the A's home opener. The Finlay effect is showing up in strat! The Twins sent Bill Hands to the mound to face Rick Wise (Wise had a no hitter in 71 in which he hit 2 homers).

Hands pitched one of his best games in almost a year as he only gave up one run, and four hits over seven innings. Tom Hall pitched the last two innings to get his first save of 71. Wise surrendered three solo homers to Tony Oliva, Harmon Killebrew, and rookie Jim Nettles (Graig's brother). Twins spoil the A's homer opener 3-1.

Game Two

A repeat of game one as the Twins win 3-1 as they beat Vida Blue for the first time after losing to him four times in 1970. The Twins Ace of the last two seasons Jim Perry pitches 8 and 1/3 to gain his second victory of year in as many games. Killebrew hits his third homer on the young season. Leo Cardenas gets his first as does Rick Monday for the Twins. Perry carried a no hitter into the 6th. Harmon Killebrew said that Blue hung him a curve ball and further stated that the kid should just throw his fastball - which he deemed unhittable. Killebrew went on to say that he believes Blue will be very dominate this year, especially as it warms up.

Game Three

The A's outlast the Twins 4-3 as both Jim Hunter and Fergie Jenkins toss solid complete game efforts. A's catcher Dave Duncan has 3 RBI in the 8 spot while the Twins Donn Clendenon has all three RBI for the Twins.

Game Four

In what we fear is the shape of things to come, the A's score 6 unearned runs in the fifth as the Twins amke five errors in the inning. The A's go on to win 10-3. Andy Messersmithtosses a complete game win for the A's while Twin starter Ken Holtzman is knocked early for the second start in a row. Holtzman has now been sent to showers early twice despite having an ERA of 1.93 as he suffers from an alarming rate of errors in the field.

The Twins left the Oakland Coliseum with the sinking feeling that the tide has turned in the AL west. Despite the split, the A's just seemed like the better team.
