Padres split with the mets and with the exception of 2 bad splits, could have had the sweep. Game 1: Bud Harrelson leads off with a double then Ron Reed retires the next 17 batters in a row before Harrelson gets a 2 out single in the 6th. Ken Singleton then follows with a HR1-3 flyout and gets a split of 2 for the 2 run homer and the only runs of the game. Reed finished with a 3 hitter and walked 2 (both immediately after the homerun). McDowell allowed only 5 hits but had 6 walks to go with 9 k's. game 2: Padres open a 4-2 after 4 but the mets score 2 in 5th and 2 in 6th to take the lead. Padres sent 11 men to plate in scoring 6 runs in the 8th as the battered Tug McGraw. Speizio led off with a single and then, playing the backwards McGraw perfectly, lefty pinch hitter Ron Stone draws a walk. Ellie Rodriguez bunts the runners over and lefty hitting Dave Roberts stays in and gets a hit off McGraw's card to bring in one run. Harmon singled to tie the game and send Roberts to second. Roberts is an easy out on a botched hit and run but Helms redeems himself with a followup hit and run double to give the Padres the lead. Brown and Colbert walk to load the bases before Ivan Murrell hits one between the pair of 4 outfielders for a 2 run double. SPeizio follows with a grounder that Bud Harrelson can't handle to finish the scoring. Enzo Hernandez, pinch hitting for the pinch hitter Ron Stone finally made the final out, just missing hits in his 3 column. game 3: Padres open a 4-0 after 6 1/2 innings but the Mets claw back to make it 4-3 going into the 9th. Wayne Garrett drew a one out walk and pinch hitter Tommie Agee sent a grounder to the 1e10 Tommy Helms at second base. Figuring a sure double play and the inning over, the team starts to walk off the field. Of course with the Padres history, you know that Helms blows the play keeping the inning alive. 3 straight singles follow, the last over the drawn in outfield to give the Mets a 5-4 win. game 4: Padres score 3 in the 5th to take the lead for good and score a single run in each of the last 3 innings to hold on for the 7-4 win. Both teams had 11 hits, but San Diego took advantage of 9 walks (5 by starter Nolan Ryan). FOr the series the Padres left 40 men on base, including the bases loaded at least 4 times. As the saying goes, if it weren't for bad luck, the Padres would have no luck. Mike |
