Subject: Reds @ Cubs
The Reds had less-than-zero luck in week 1 - home, away or in cyberspace - and the reason for that apparently was that our pitching was too good. Holding opponents to a .187 batting average just makes them mad, I suppose, and is a sure recipe for disaster. The Cubs have a good offense, and their hitters were generally not impressed with the Reds' moundwork (Tom Seaver was given the series off), but Cincy managed to get something even better than good pitching - and much, much rarer: The Breaks. Game one was the least dramatic, as the Reds jumped on Larry Dierker early when Lee May cracked a 3-run homer in the first. Don Gullett was impressive for the Reds, allowing only 1 run over 6.2 innings and walking nobody, as the Reds cruising to an 8-1 victory. This represented the first sighting of anything resembling a Reds Offense in 1971. Cincy banged out 14 hits, and Joe Morgan also left the yard. In game two the Cincy manager tried to sneak in a start for rookie greaseballer Ross Grimsley, with mixed results. Grimsley was in trouble most of the day, but ended up matching Woodie Fryman, as each starter allowed 2 runs in 6 innings of work. once again the Cubs were swinging at everything, as Cincy hurlers walked only one batter over the first 18 innings of the series. Jerry Grote, who is supposed to make only 5 errors all year, committed two non-throwing errors (he now has 3 in 10 games), contributing to the Reds' hefty total of 5 on the day. Cincy's defense (accurately dubbed "The Blown X Squad") fell apart during Chicago's 3-run eighth, but the offense mounted an incredible comeback in the ninth when the first two batters of the inning reached base and Pete Rose followed with a deep fly onto one of those Avenues. Phil Regan finally entered the game, allowed two quick singles, got two outs, intentionally walked Lee May, then proceeded to commit an error (the Cubs only one of the day, but bad timing) to allow the winning run. The capper was another close one. This time it was the Cubs storming back in the late innings, as the Reds blew a 4-1 lead. Joe Hoerner blew the save in the ninth when Graig Nettles delivered the tying run as the Cubs were down to their final out. In the 12th inning, Pete Rose led off with a single against Ed Farmer and stole second. Rose advanced to third on Joe Morgan's fly to right, and scored on Lee May's sac fly to win it. Jack Billingham (2-0, 0.00 ERA) got the relief win. All 26 hits in the game were singles, as the Reds blew numerous x-plays once again. Alan |
