Subject: Chisox @ Oakland recap
Wilson Strike Affects Series, Sox Lose 3 of 4 Oakland, CA -- When the manufacturers of baseball gloves went on strike last week, it wasn't expected to affect any major league games. But from the press box in Oakland, it was clear that the strike came at an inopportune time for the Pale Hose. According to a source within the organization, a new shipment of gloves was supposed to arrive in Oakland prior to Thursday's opener, but it never got there. As a result, the Sox and Athletics played old-fashioned baseball, what many a grandfather called "the good old days". We don't know what our grandfathers meant, but we're fairly sure they didn't mean to go back to the days when fielders left their gloves on the field for the other team. In truth, this reporter doesn't know precisely what happened in Oakland, but it was clear that only one team was allowed to field the ball well in any given game. The Sox dropped game 1 to Chuck Dobson, 5-2. Joel Horlen pitched well, but took the loss, after the A's went ahead to stay in the 5th, when a Dick Green dribbler brought Mike Hershberger home from third; Pete Ward's throw wasn't in time. Game 2 was when the glove shortage really started to show. The final score read Sox 3, A's 2, with Chris Short besting Catfish Hunter. But the real score was A's 5, Sox 2. Errors, that is, including an unfathomable 3 errors by usually sure-handed A's shortstop Bert Campaneris. After the game, he suggested that Luis Aparicio had soiled his glove with some unknown substance. One wag suggested it must have been flubber. In game 3, Oakland hurler Jim Nash took the accusations personally, firing a three-hitter to lead the A's to a 5-0 win over the Sox. Again, the glove issue arose, when the A's first run scored on Ken Berry's throwing error. Campaneris may have gotten even with his Chicago counterpart, as Aparicio's error allowed another run to score. Game 4 was a nip and tuck affair, with the A's winning it 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth against Sox closer Wilbur Wood, when Hershberger scored on a Rick Monday double, and Danny Cater's single brought home Monday. The Sox tried to mount a rally in the ninth, even putting the go-ahead run on base in the ninth on, what else, a Sal Bando error. But, Diego Segui closed the door on the Sox, and clinched the series for Oakland. After the outing, Sox manager Ben Lea was heard suggesting that perhaps Wood might get a start soon, in hopes that more work might work through his control issues. Game files to follow tomorrow. Y'all's, Ben |
