Subject: Tigers @ Brewers
Detroit won game one, 7-5, by scoring 6 times after the sixth inning. Mickey Lolich went the distance, as he usually does, although the Brewers (10 hits, 9 singles) nearly nibbled him to death. Bill Melton had 3 hits for Detroit, including his seventh homer of the season. In game two, Marty Pattin threw a CG, allowing only 7 hits, but the Tigers moundwork was way ahead of him: a combined 2-hitter by Mike Kilkenny (of all people) and Fred Scherman. Kilkenny is now 3-0 on the year, and his ERA has (just barely) dropped below 5.0. Mickey Lolich should get his kind of breaks. Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Willie Montanez hit home run #9, and Dick McAuliffe added another for the visitors. In game 3, it was All Brewers, All the Time. Milwaukee tied their season high in runs scored (10, and this time they WON the game), and Bill Parsons held the Kitties to two hits: a homer by Norm Cash in the sixth, and a two-out, ninth-inning single by Al Kaline. Ken Forsch was the victim of the unbelievable dice rolls, and reliever Tom Murphy was once again amazing, as he contines - against all odds - to maintain an ERA abouve 9. Detroit team pitching stats are vastly inflated by the fact that about once a week, the dice & cards go 200% in favor of our opponent, and the Tigers lose 17-7, 12-3, 13-1, or 10-1; in the games where they're not COMPLETELY hosed, Detroit does OK. Over 32% of the runs Detroit has allowed in 1971 are in those 4 games; in our other 34 games, the Tigers have allowed 107 runs (3.1 per game, with a 21-13 record). Alan |
