Subject: Tigers @ White Sox
The Tigers got the breaks when it counted in this series - all but the last one, that is. Game 1: The starting pitchers entered the game with a combined record of 14-1, Tom Bradley (9-0) vs. Lew Krausse (5-1). The Tigers would bunch their offense into 3 runs in the seventh inning (and none anywhere else), but it was enough to hand Mr. Bradley loss #1 of 1971. Krausse allowed only 1 run in 6 innings, and Mel Queen pitched the final three frames for his 3rd save. Sandy Alomar Sr. had 3 hits and a stolen base for the Sox. Game 2: Detroit banged out 14 hits against lefty starter John Cumberland, and Mickey Lolich was on cruise control until the 8th. At that time the Tigers made their best attempt to vomit the game away, allowing 4 runs, but the 8-2 lead only became 8-6, and that's how it ended. The fact that Detroit left 12 runners on base almost become important, but not quite. Mickey Stanley led off the game with his 2nd home run, and the Tigers muscled a total of 7 XBH among their 15 hits on the day. Bill Melton launched home run #9 of 1971 against his ex-mates; that trade will start looking a lot worse for Detroit in a few months... Game 3: A real shocker: Tiger Choke followed by Tiger Comeback! Joe Coleman took a 2-0 lead into the Chicago 8th. Alomar led off with a single but was CS on a blown hit & run play (that happened twice to the Sox in this game). Undeterred, the next two batters reached base, and pinch hitter Jim Beauchamp greeted reliever Fred Scherman with a 3-run homer. But Don Kessinger gave Detroit a 4-3 lead with one out in the ninth, doubling home Dick McAuliffe and Al Kaline. Terry Forster came in and walked nearly everybody, allowing 2 more runs to score. Bill Stoneman had pitched very well, as Tiger batters rolled his empty 6 column about 50% of the time (yes, really). As a final indignity, HAL permitted Forster to make the last out in the bottom of the ninth, though batters remained on the ChiSox bench. Game 4: Wilbur Wood pitched 10 strong innings, allowing only 5 hits and one run. Tom ("Boom Boom") Murphy actually pitched well, dropping his ERA below 9.0 at long last. Detroit took the lead in the fourth on Willie Horton's homer, the Tigers first hit of the day. Ken Henderson lifted one over the wall in the Chicago 5th to tie the game, and it stayed that way until the tenth, when Tommy Davis, in his final AB with Chicago, took Mel Queen over the wall. Key stat of the game: DP: DEA - 0, CHA - 4. Alan |
