Subject: Reds @ Cubs
In what was basically a repeat of Cincy's Week 10 road series, we split 4 in Wrigley with the Cubs. One game was a Reds' blowout, the other three were closer, and we don't do so well when luck becomes a factor. Game 1: Larry Dierker was pounded early, and his defense didn't help him much either (Graig Nettles booted both of his x-plays at 3B, leading to 3 unearend runs). Cincy turned this one into a 9-1 laugher, but it could have been closer. Don Gullett threw a CG for the Reds, but allowed 13 baserunners. Fortunately the Cubs stranded 12 of them. Game 2: Ross Grimsley has only 2 chances of allowing a baserunner in his 6 column: 6-5 and 6-6. Cubs batters rolled those numbers FOUR TIMES in the first TWO innings. Nettles atoned for his game one errors by smacking a 3-run homer (on 6-4) in the first inning. The dice and cards having done their massive damage, Grimsley settled down and neither team scored again until the 8th, when Joe Pepitone added a 2-run blast off Jack Billingham. The Reds got zero breaks this game (just slightly fewer than our average), as Bert Blyleven (HOW was this guy only 3-8?!?) cruised to a 5-hit, no-walk shutout. Game 3: Jim Kaat lasted only 3 innings, as the Reds jumped to a quick 6-0 lead, and only choked 3 runs of it back. Tom Seaver went the distance, struggling along on another 11-hitter. At least he's winning games now (11-7 record, and now on pace for 20+ wins again). Lee May homered for the second time in the series, and had 3 RBI. May is the solid favorite to start at 1B for the N.L. in the All-Star game. Along with Joe Morgan and Jerry Grote (who are just doing what they're supposed to in 1971), May stands out like a sore thumb in Cincy's Offensive Cavalcade of Underachievers and Clutch Chokers. Game 4: Another close one goes in the L column for the Reds. HAL brought back Larry Dierker on only 2 days' rest for the Cubs, and Don Wilson took the mound for Cincinnati. They would put up identical stats for the day (and neither would figure in the decision): Wilson: 6 5 1 1 0 4 Dierker: 6 5 1 1 0 5 (not bad for a supposedly tired guy, eh?) Lee May had given Cincy the lead in the second with yet another homer; the Cubs tied the game with 3 singles in the fourth. Finally in the seventh, the Cubs got some amazing rolls & splits, culminating in a Pepitone 3-run homer, effectively ending the game. Cincy did have runners on the corners in the ninth with nobody out against Earl "Batting Practice" Stephenson, but could only manage a feeble sac fly. Alan |
