Subject: 1962 World Series results
Boxscores can be found here: Although the 1962 regular season hasn't yet ended, the 1962 World Series has. The San Francisco Giants became the second team in Pre-Smiley history to win back-to-back series by overwhelming the Detroit Tigers 4 games to 1 in online play. In a dominating performance, SFN outhit the A.L. champs .306 to .171 (SFN scored 25 runs; DEA had 25 *hits*), outhomered them 7-0 and the Giants converted over 88% of their x-plays. ------------------- Game 1: Jim Bunning vs. Juan Marichal started out evenly enough, the teams swapping the lead in the early innings and winding up tied at 3 after 3. But the Giants broke out the long ball in the fifth, with Mays & McCovey launching solo shots, and Bunning was finally removed after allowing 12 hits in 5 innings. Marichal meanwhile was cruising along, a bit wild (6 walks) but permitting just 4 hits over 7 innings. Four SFN relievers held the Tigers at bay and the final score was 6-3 - a close result despite San Fran's 15-5 advantage in hits. ------------------- Game 2: Ex-Tiger Hank Aguirre was tough on his old mates, going the distance and facing only 3 batters over the minimum (2 hits, 1 error). Detroit starter Bob Friend bled slowly to death, allowing runs in the second, third, fourth & fifth innings, but mostly just one at a time. Home runs by Tommy Davis & Felipe Alou extended the 2-0 lead to 5-0, and seeing as how the Tigers were having trouble managing baserunners - much less *runs* - Aguirre had way more support than he'd need. ------------------- Game 3: The setting changed as the series moved to Tiger Stadium, but Detroit fans had to suffer through a carbon copy of game 2: SFN starter Orlando Pena handcuffed the Kitties, going the distance on a 3-hitter in San Francisco's 4-1 win. Johnny Podres started and pitched reasonably well for the home team (6 IP, 2 runs), but for most of the day it was clear than even a 1-0 deficit would be insurmountable. Felipe Alou homered again for the Giants, and the Tigers didn't break the shutout until the ninth, scoring a run - appropriately while killing 2 outs in the process - on Al Kaline's GIDP. ------------------- Game 4: DEA had held the lead for exactly one half inning so far this series, so it was quite as shock when we took a 1-0 lead against Marichal in the fourth inning - and held it until the eighth at which time Jim Davenport tied the contest with a solo homer. In the Detroit 8th, reliever Jim Hannan loaded the bases with a single & two walks and Hank Foiles drove in what would be the winning run with a sac fly. Pinch-hitter Jose Tartabull singled home another and a throwing error on the play tacked on one more for a 4-1 Tiger victory. Jim Bunning outdid Marichal by a slight margin, and Don McMahon retired the Giants in order in the ninth for the save. ------------------- Game 5: San Francisco scored a pair in the first, aided by things like errors & wild pitches, then added 4 more runs by smashing extra-base hits in the second against series L.V.P. Bob Friend, effectively winning the championship at that point despite having a few more innings to kill. Eddie Fisher wasn't as unhittable as some SFN starters, but he got the job done (6 IP, 2 runs) and 4 relievers held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way. Final score: 9-2. Detroit got 10 baserunners - far more than in some games - but aborted all potential rallies by hitting into 4 DPs. Congrats to the Larry and the Giants for making short work of both the Tigers and the entire National League in 1962, and the Tigers (who will be under new management) are already looking forward to a rematch - and a different outcome - in 1961. :-) Alan |
