Subject: Tigers @ White Sox

On Opening Day of 1968, the Tigers & White Sox hooked up in a 20-inning marathon, and they were at it again it game 2 of this series.

Mickey Lolich and Bill Stoneman were the game two starters.  The Tigers scored 5 in the first inning before even one batter was retired, and immediately choked 4 of those runs right back in the bottom of the inning.  Detroit extended their narrow lead to 6-4 in the fourth when Don Kessinger led off with a triple, and Lolich doubled him home.  Once again, the Tigers could not stand the prosperity, and handed 2 runs back to the Sox to tie the game, then for good measure allowed the Sox the lead in the seventh on another unearned run.

In the ninth, down to our last out, Detroit would get the first of only two breaks we'd get in this entire series, as Willie Horton's single plated Mickey Stanley and sent the game into extras.  Neither team got a hit until the 12th, when Ken Henderson singled and was gunned down on an attempted steal of second.

Detroit had numerous opportunities to win, but hit into GIDP's in each of the 13th, 14th and 15th innings.  Finally in the 17th inning, Norm Cash lined a solo homer over the wall in right-center off of Tom Bradley (break #2 of 2), and although Ken Forsch walked a couple of batters in the bottom of the inning, the Tigers came away with the 8-7 victory at last when Fred Scherman and Tom Murphy were able to retire the last two Sox batters.

In games one & three, Detroit proved that the I-75 virus (imported from Cincinnati) still has no cure, as the home team performed some amazing feats in the clutch (or conversely, the road team performed some amazing chokes).
