sept 8 Whitey Ford came through with a solid 9 innings as the New York AL Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 2 to 0 at Fenway Park. New York AL came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. Tom Tresh started the scoring when he ripped a solo home run (his 20th of the season). Dale Long stepped up next and he smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 4th of the season). New York AL had just 5 hits for the night. For Ford(10-18) it was his 2nd shutout this year. The loss was charged to Jack Sanford(10-12). 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances tonight,' Boston's manager said. 'Ford just was too much for our guys.' New York AL erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning as they scored 4 runs on 4 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Jack Reed who quieted the home crowd when he tripled plating two runs. Both teams ended up with 7 on the night. Tex Clevenger(6-4) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Ryne Duren recorded his 15th save. Arnold Earley(1-1) ended up with the loss in relief. By giving up 1 run in 2/3 of an inning his ERA increased from 1.50 to 2.70. After the game, it took a long while before Boston's manager emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as I think you'll understand.
