Subject: Twins trade Killebrew!
In a surprise move, the Twins moved power hitting star and team leader Harmon Killebrew to the New York Mets. Killebrew, who led the Twins to the AL west flag in 69 and 70 has been mired in a season long slump of major proportions. It is as if the west to east winds have completely died at Met Stadium. In addition to Killebrew's lost production, other key Twins are having off seasons begging the question: are the Twins too old?
With this in mind, Twins management has decided to begin a rebuilding process. Also, Killebrew may be suffering from a badly damaged big toe on his left foot. He has not been driving the ball at all this year. He was hit in his big toe off of a foul tip from his own bat late in spring training.
Thus, the Twins sent Kllebrew to the New York where the Mets hope he will rebound to help them solidify their effort to win the NL Pennant in 1971.
The Twins brass are pleased to received the fine glove of Ken Berry to patrol centerfield. The Twins also like the prospects of IF Wayne Garrett. The Twins scouts say this guy will hit for power, take a walk now and then, and lay down a mean bunt (typical of the quality of the Twins scouting throughout the early 70's LOL).
However, Twin owner Rick Ramacier said, "almost breaks my heart to trade the Killer. But I fear he is at the end of his fine career, and with us needing to face the need to rebuild, and his desire to try for one more ring, I just had no choice but to make the deal. All of us will miss Killer greatly. At the end of the season, we will be retiring his number 3, and renaming the service road to Met Stadium, Killebrew Way." |
