St. Louis came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs using 2  hits. After an out was recorded, George Hendrick got things going when he laced a one-base hit.  One out later, Leon Durham stepped in and he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 2nd of the season).  Chicago NL had 11 hits in the game while St. Louis had 6, but St. Louis had the more timely hits. The win was credited to Joaquin Andujar(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing 1 run. Andujar got relief help from Andy Hassler who gained credit for his 1st save.
