Subject: Reds @ Mets
Talent-wise, the Reds aren't that far behind the Mets, although a quick glance at the standings renders that statement questionable, if not outright humorous. Cincy, as usual, didn't quite get our share of the breaks, but left Shea Stadium with a split (that should have been "3 out of 4"). Game 1 was the one of the low points in the luckless Cincy season, as we made a Cy Young candidate out of one Bruce Dal Canton. In the first, the Reds got two hits and a walk, and had the bases loaded with one out. Needless to say, no runs scored, and the Reds would get a total of ZERO more hits on the day. The Mets' 4's in the field were making Gold Glove plays galore, while a key blown X by Cincy opened the floodgates in the NY second. Final score: a 7-0 laugher for the home team. Gary Nolan threw 7.2 shutout innings in game 2, as the Reds took a 6-0 lead into the ninth, and left with a 6-2 win. Wayne Simpson allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and 5 earned runs in his 5 IP. In game 3, Jack Billingham and Nolan Ryan had forgettable outings, the Reds blew a 4-2 lead (and weren't done yet!), but a Tony Perez solo homer in the top of the tenth won it for the Reds. Well.... it WOULD have won it if the Reds could have supressed the urge to gag just this once. Down to their last out, the Mets pushed two across in the tenth to win it. Another week, another patented choke-a-rama. Tom Seaver was saved for game 4, and Sam McDowell took the mound against him. Seaver, as he has done so often this year, was extra-mediocre, but pitched JUST well enough to win, getting another CG in the process (Seaver has requested that the Cincy bullpen NEVER be allowed to enter games when he starts). Cincy was up 4-3 in the seventh, allowed the Mets to tie it, but took the lead for good when Perez homered in the eighth and this time, incredibly, we didn't waste Tony's effort and give 2 runs right back.
