Subject: Tigers @ Orioles
It's been very chilly in Baltimore so far this September; a visit from the almost-as-cold Tigers and their "I-75 Curse" should have been just what the doctor ordered. Detroit outhit the home team 40-27, but (as usual) rarely delivered when it counted, and after two quick wins by the visitors, Baltimore got what they needed: a split, permanently damaging the Tigers' pennant chances for 1971. Game 1: Mickey Lolich allowed the O's a first-inning run, then buckled down and made sure that was all they'd get. Lolich, like most of the Detroit pitchers in 1971, has suffered from the exquisite combination of massive underachievement and no luck whatsoever all year long. Today he held Baltimore to 5 hits, 2 walks, and one run that scored only because of a blown x-play gift. Final score: 3-1. Bill Melton broke the 1-1 tie with a sol shot in the sixth. Game 2: Lew Krausse has had luck every bit as bad as Mickey Lolich, and like Lolich, Krausse turned it around for this game. Baltimore got 3 late runs, but had given up 11 by that time, as Detroit put up 5-spots in both the sixth and seventh frames. Typically, we should have saved some of that for later, because those would be the final breaks Detroit would see in this series. Melton homered again, and Krausse added 3 RBI to his own cause. Game 3: Two very clutch errors handed the O's 3 unearned runs, just precisely enough for the Tigers to blow a 4-1 lead and lose 7-4 as the universe returned to its normal alignment. Joe Coleman allowed only 8 hits in 9 IP, but also walked 8. Game 4: Each team only collected 5 hits, and Dave McNally posted a rare good outing. The O's broke a 2-2 tie in the late innings, and won 4-2. We now await the results from the remainder of the home-and-home series this week; Detroit does have an excellent record in Tiger Stadium (and an atrocious one away from it). Alan |
