may 22 In a dramatic ending at Forbes Field the Pittsburgh Pirates won in their last at-bat beating the New York AL Yankees by the count of 2 to 1. The deciding run was scored by Pittsburgh in the 9th. Chico Fernandez stroked a single. Harry Bright next to the plate and he reached on an error. Bill Virdon then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Steve Boros got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Roberto Clemente came to the plate and lashed a single giving Pittsburgh the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Pittsburgh ended up with 10 hits for the game while New York AL had 6. The victory was credited to Al McBean(2-1) who went 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Bobby Shantz(1-2) was charged with the loss in relief. Skowron had a great evening at the plate. He lofted a three-run bomb in the 1st inning, hit a single in the 5th inning and belted a three-run homer (his 9th of the season) in the 7th inning. New York AL had 10 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 4. The victory went to Ralph Terry(3-5) who went 5 innings, allowing 1 run. Ditmar earned the save, his 2nd. Ed Rakow(5-3) absorbed the loss. He gave up 5 runs in 3 innings and saw his ERA jump from 3.48 to 3.79. 'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some adjustments,' Skowron said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are getting you out certain ways, you've got to make changes.' Harry Bright then lined a one-base hit, and an error was also committed, making Pittsburgh the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration.
