Subject: RE: [SmileyList] Opinion
For what it's worth, I'll add my voice to the chorus on trading draft picks. As has been said many times, we all know what all the players involved are going to do, for the length of their careers. If you trade for (sorry, Brandon -- I'm going to keep running with the Santo example) Ron Santo, you know exactly what Santowill do for the rest of his career. MLB trades, of course, aren't like that -- they very often (more often than not?) include minor leaguers, and it's uncertain how those minor leaguers are going to develop. And that's the key word here -- "uncertainty". A bad team with a good player near the end of his career/contract (in MLB) can and often will take a chance and trade that guy to pick up something *uncertain* for the future. (Randy Johnson for Freddy Garcia, John Halama, and Carlos Guillen, for example.)The team giving up the stud is getting the chance of something good, that the prospects they're picking up will develop; the team getting the stud improves their chances for the pennant, while at the same time minimizing their future risk by sa So, how can we mirror that trade when we don't have that uncertainty. Obviously, we can't trade minor leaguers, since there aren't any, and it'd be silly and counter-productive to try to create them. In fact, there's really onlyone uncertain aspect about this league, only one really randomizing factor (other than the dice themselves)... what player will be available with a particular draft pick. To summarize, I'd argue that the ability to trade draft picks for us is analogous to trading minor leaguers for the MLB clubs. One man's opinion, Ben -- Ben Lea -- bjlea@... Reference Librarian / Electronic Resources Guy University of Missouri-Rolla (573) 341-4007 -----Original Message----- From: Steve Bivens [mailto:oslo79@...] Sent: Monday, August 12, 2002 11:12 PM To: SmileyList@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [SmileyList] Opinion I agree with Scott on this one. The trade only once is annoying, but not nearly so restrictive as the no trade draft picks. As a losing team, I can tell you that it is nearly impossible to make a trades that will benefit my future. Without picks it becomes merely body swapping...for the most part. For example, if I wanted to move Mike Marshall (which I can't since I traded to get him/which makes some sense since I won't be competing this year) what could I expect to get for him? Who will give me a younger, longer term player? Now the real problem may be the fact that Montreal has about 5 more years of bad teams, and it is not the rules themselves. But I sure would like to pick up some futures... My 2 cents, Steve B.
----- Original Message ----- From: shcampbell@... To: SmileyList@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, August 12, 2002 9:01 PM Subject: Re: [SmileyList] Opinion I have no problem with how the rule currently is. It does restrict us but you knew that when you dealt for Santo. Now, if we could just get back to being able to deal draft picks then I think teams (especially the yearly major league doormats) would have a chance to actually compete (like Montreal a few years ago). How it currently stands, they have their hands tied. Scott In a message dated 8/12/02 8:54:27 PM Pacific Daylight Time, bcolvin1978@... writes: OK I have already talked to Alan and Mike on this adn they didnt agree with me. I want to see what the rest of the league has to say on this, and if there is enough people who agree with what I do maybe put it towards a vote. Basically my complaint is on trading. I have no problem with not trading picks, dont like it but can live with it. I can live with not claiming all our FA. The part I have a hard time with is the no trading players twice. To me this rule acts as a double edged sword. While it does limit the trading going on, it also punishes us for trading while the constitution warrants trading to see if we can indeed run our teams better than the real ones were. But with this rule we are limited in what we can trade, and the players we trade for cant be released unless they get the dreaded UC. What happens if say I have Santo as I do and I have another 3b some rookie who is just as good, I am essentially in a good position as I have depth to gain what I need to compete, but am forced with this depth to trade the great rookie since Santo is forced to stay. So I am punished for picking him up. Also say on Santo it is towards the end of his career and he abosutely bites, to bad you traded for him you cant release him so suck it up. Once again my freedome to improve my team via an open roster spot is taken away. Here is my proposal: Basically if I pick up Santo from Cubs, I can trade him just not back to the Cubs. Now he could go back to teh Cubbies later if ANOTHER team wants to deal him there. I just think this will help in trading and allow us some more chances to improve. So with that lets hear some opinions. Mike and Alan I dont want you to think I was going over your heads or anything, but I just disagreed with you on this warranting some talk or a vote.
