Subject: Tigers @ Yankees
After winning game 1, Detroit takes two of the final three as well to clinch a tie for second place in the A.L. East. Game 2: The junior Senator from Kentucky got the vast majority of the breaks, cruising to a 5-0 lead before settling for a 6-3 win. In his final start of 1971, Roy White's line was 4 2 4 3 with 2 home runs and a stolen base. He should have run out of usage one game sooner. Game 3: Emergency starter Steve Kealey, despite his sub-2.00 ERA, did not fare as well. He exited during a 5-run Detroit fourth inning. The Yankees committed 5 errors to aide the Tigers' cause. Ken Forsch threw 5 good innings to even his record for the year at 13-13. Runaway Rookie-of-the-Year Willie Montanez smacked his 39th and final home run of the season. Game 4: Joe Coleman went the distance, allowing only 2 unearned runs, as the Tigers closed out the 1971 season with a 5-2 win. In a repeat of game 1, Detroit out-LOBbed the home team by the count of 13-4, in what should never have been a close game. In a statistical oddity, reserve third baseman Ike Brown was intentionally walked twice by the Yankees (among the 9 free passes Detroit enjoyed on this day). Alan |
