JULY 17 45,283 fans watched an exciting game at Tiger Stadium. The streaking New York AL Yankees topped the Detroit Tigers by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4. New York AL set the tone of the game in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on 1 base hits. The key at-bat was by Elston Howard who silenced the stadium when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 14th of the season). Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The winning pitcher was Jerry Walker(6-5) who allowed 1 run in 7 innings. Jim Bunning(12-7) absorbed the loss. Despite losing Detroit's manager was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
