Pale Hose, Yankees Split NEW YORK -- Never has the supposed truism about lineup protection been proven more conclusively than in this series, as Mickey Mantle was the key to the series. In game 1, the Sox took a 2-run lead in the 4th, on Pete Ward's home run. But Sox hurler Gary Peters got in trouble in the bottom of the 6th, when Tom Tresh, pinch-hitting for starter Mel Stottlemyre, laced a double. Roy White brought him home with a single, then Jim Fregosi grounded to second, and Joe Pepitone flied out to center. This brought Mickey Mantle to the plate, with a runner in scoring position and two outs, a situation he'd become familiar with over the rest of the series. Sox manager Ben Lea went to the mound, but Peters wanted to retire Mantle, rather than pitch to Yankees' catcher John Bateman. After his first pitch to Mantle was deposited in the left-field stands, Lea decided that wouldn't happen again, but it was too late to salvage game one. Yankees win, 3-2. Game 2 saw Mantle come to bat with runners in scoring position and 2 outs in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings. Each time, he was intentionally walked, bringing Bateman to the plate. In the first, Bateman flied out meekly to short, and he grounded out third to first in the 3rd and 5th, killing a Yankees rally each time. Meanwhile, the Sox were able to move runners along nicely, with Sandy Alomar collecting 2 hits and 2 RBI. Sox win, 5-1. Game 3 again saw Mantle faced with two-out, runners-in-scoring-position situations, and again he was intentionally walked. And again, Bateman wasn't able to come through. However, the Yankees pulled the win out, when Bill Robinson, pinch-hitting for Vicente Romo in the 8th, brought home Mantle & Andy Kosko with a two-run single. Pete Ward's 2nd homer of the series was the only offense for the Sox. There were numerous double switches, which you'd expect from a game started by Fritz Peterson. Yankees win, 4-2. In a classic but unexpected pitchers' duel, Steve Hargan and Tommy John matched zeroes through 10 innings in game 4. But in the 11th, after Alomar reached on a walk, Tommy John got the bunt down -- twice earlier in the game, the Sox had bunted into double plays -- and Luis Aparicio followed with a RBI single. Hargan was the hard-luck loser, while John gave way to Bob Locker to close out the game. Final score, 1-0, Sox. Game files to follow later in the week (probably tomorrow). And sorry about the Fritz Peterson double switch thing -- I couldn't resist. Y'all's, Ben |
