Subject: Cincy @ Pittsburgh
In a surprisingly low-scoring series (considering these teams' lineups), the Reds take all four. Two games were shutouts, and the other two were also quite close, but need not have been: Game 1: George Culver goes 8 innings, giving up just 3 hits and no walks (the Reds & Pirates are probably the two least walkable teams in the league), and wins by the score of 2-0. Bob Moose pitched well but took the loss for the Buccos. Reds left 10 runners on base to the Pirates 3. Game 2: George Brunet outduels Luis Tiant, 3-0. Brunet got all but the last out, giving up only 4 hits and no walks. Maury Wills got 3 of the 4 Pirate hits, and the Cincy DP combo of Helms & Woodward combined for 4 hits, 2 runs & 2 RBI. Game 3: The Pirates get their first run of the series (unearned) in the first inning, and add two more later on Willie Stargell's first (!) homer of 1968, but the Reds prevail by the score of 4-3. Neither Don Wilson nor Bob Veale pitched especially well - both teams got 11 hits, but the Reds outwalked Pittsburgh 7 to 1. LOB: Cincy 13, Buccos 6. Game 4: 5-3 in 11 innings. Starters Tony Cloninger & Steve Blass were long gone by the end. Cincinnati was up 3-0 after 3 innings, but couldn't hold it. Willie Stargell hit his second homer in two games for the Pirates, but Johnny Bench and the resurgent Alex ('E-7') Johnson each had four hits for the Reds. Cincy won it in the 11th with two unearned runs caused by Roberto Clemente's throwing error. Jim McGlothlin got the W, while Ron Kline took the tough L. Cincy outhit the Pirates 18-9 in the game, and outstranded them 14-7. Files are attached. Alan |
