august 3 Mickey Mantle homered and had 2 RBI as the New York AL Yankees outscored the Kansas City A's 7 to 6. New York AL tallied 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Elston Howard who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he lined a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Kansas City had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The victory was credited to Ralph Terry(10-11) who went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs. Luis Arroyo earned the save, his 13th. The loss was charged to Rollie Sheldon(6-7). He was unable to control the New York AL offense and allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. 'This was a tough loss,' said Kansas City's manager, 'the kind that sticks with you for awhile.' New York AL came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Mantle initiated the scoring when he hit a bases-empty home run (his 36th of the season). Yogi Berra came next and he delivered a single. Two outs later Clete Boyer stepped up to the plate and he doubled scoring one more run. Gene Woodling followed and he was walked intentionally. Bobby Richardson stepped into the box and lashed a single scoring the final run of the inning. Kansas City scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them from victory. The victory went to Tex Clevenger(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing 1 run. Jim Coates earned his 14th save. Glen Hobbie(8-7) was tagged with the loss in relief. 'The only way this one could have been better', said Clevenger, 'was if we had played it at home.'
