AUGUST 24 Catcher Elston Howard cleared the bases with his grand slam at Metropolitan Stadium where the New York AL Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 7 to 5. Howard was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He delivered a base-hit in the 2nd inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 21st of the season) in the 3rd inning. New York AL finished with 9 hits in the victory. The victory was credited to Dick Donovan(13-4) who went 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 5 runs. Luis Arroyo gained credit for his 15th save. Joe Gibbon(8-16) took the loss. New York AL scored big getting 5 runs off him in 2 and 2/3 innings.
