Subject: 1961 World Series Results
A wild series that went 7 games with two excellent teams: Game 1: Willie Mays and Jim Davenport homered in the 4th and 5th innings respectively, turning a 2-1 Giants lead into a 5-1 lead. Mike McCormick was strong over 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits to give the Giants a 1-0 lead in the series with a 6-2 win. Jerry Lumpe, who would go on to have a great series, started out well with 3 hits, 2 runs scored and an rbi for the Giants as well. Game 2: Detroit fires back to take game 2 12-2. The big blow was a Dick Groat grand slam in the 5th, staking the Tigers to a 5-0 lead. Norm Cash had a pair of home runs and 4 rbi as well. Jim Bunning struck out 10 over 7 1/3 innings and allowed just 2 runs. Game 3: Going to San Francisco for game 3, the Giants came out with guns ablazing. SanFran pounded Don Mossi for NINE runs over the first 3 innings. Dick Stuart, Tommy Davis, and Felipe Alou all homered and had 3 rbi for the Giants and Lumpe had 4 rbi. Don Cardwell wasn't great for the Giants, but he was alot better than Mossi and gained the win. 11-5 Giants. Game 4: A 15 inning affair that saw the benches used up. Frank Bolling singled in a run to tie the game in the 9th at 5 all. No team scored again until the 15th when 3 Giants pitchers combined to walk 4 batters with Eddie Matthews gaining the rbi on #4. Detroit didn't get a hit in the 15th but won the game 6-5 when Larry Sherry was able to shut down the Giants in their half of the 15th. Lenny Green had 4 hits for the Tigers and Dick Groat had a 3 run homer. Series tied 2 games each. Game 5: Detroit was sitting pretty to win the game and go back home needing only 1 more win with a 2 run lead in the 9th and ace reliever Terry Fox on the hill. Willie Mays sent Candlestick park into an uproar when he tied the game with a 2 run homer. Smokey Burgess then tore the hearts out of the Tigers in the 11th when he launched a 3 run bomb to win it. Jerry Lumpe had 4 more hits in the Giants 8-5 win. Norm Cash hit his 4th home run of the series in the loss. Back to Detroit. Game 6: Pitching had been scarce up until this point in the series. Don Mossi had something to prove after his last outing and did so with a 5 hit shutout for the Tigers sending the series to a deciding 7th game. The Giants pitching was nearly as good with Milt Pappas and 2 relievers holding the Tigers to 6 hits. 2 of them were solo home runs from Norm Cash and Eddie Matthews. 2-0 Tigers win. Game SEVEN: Frank Lary had 2 previous starts in the Series, and they both stunk. He came up big in this one though, shutting out a great hitting Giants team on 5 hits for the second night in a row to take the World Series 4 games to 3. McCormick pitched very well for the Giants as well, but Detroit was able to break through in the 6th for 3 runs, thanks in large to a 2 run Al Kaline single. 3-0 Tigers win. Let the grape juice flow. A very even series to the end. San Fran hit .252 with 10 HR's and 32 runs. Detroit hit .251 with 10 HR's and 35 runs scored. The only glaring difference was the walk total. San Francisco pitchers combined to walk 45 Tigers while the Tigers pitching staff walked just 17. Norm Cash probably gets Series MVP with 5 home runs and a Series leading .346 average. Eddie Matthews and Dick Groat had outstanding series as well for the Tigers. Matthews hit .308 with 7 walks, 2 HR's, and 7 rbi. Groat hit just .250, but he made his hits count. Groat had a double, triple, and 2 home runs good for 10 rbi in the series. Jerry Lumpe hit .343 for the Giants and Willie Mays had 3 homers and 6 rbi for the Giants. Mike McCormick pitched great for the Giants with a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings pitched. Thanks for the great series Larry. That was 2 great teams slugging it out. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for earth-friendly autos?
