Pittsburgh had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Lee Maye started the inning off right when he tripled. Bill Mazeroski came next and he laced a base-hit knocking in a run. Donn Clendenon then singled. Clendenon took second on the throw. Jerry May was up next and he would hit into a fielders choice giving Pittsburgh the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. The game was a wild affair with the lead changing hands 5 times. The win went to Roy Face(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Don Shaw(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. By surrending 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning his ERA jumped from 2.45 to 3.86. Dennis Van Langen was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Steve Dewing, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!' The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Pittsburgh won the game in the 14th inning. Jose Pagan led off and keyed the rally when he delivered a one-base hit. Bill Mazeroski was next and he slapped a single. Manny Mota struck out, unable to help the rally. Jerry May was the next batter, but he struck out. Matty Alou stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Maury Wills kept the rally going and laced a single resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. The winning pitcher was Jim Shellenback(2-1) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Don Shaw(0-3) ended up with the loss in relief. Shellenback was helped out by Orlando Pena who recorded his 6th save. The losing pitcher was Jack Fisher(1-6). He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings.
