In a thrilling finish the Pittsburgh Pirates won in dramatic fashion coming
back to beat the New York NL Mets by the count of 6 to 5.

Pittsburgh had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing
3 base hits.  Lee Maye started the inning off right when he tripled.  Bill
Mazeroski came next and he laced a base-hit knocking in a run.  Donn
Clendenon then singled.  Clendenon took second on the throw.  Jerry May was
up next and he would hit into a fielders choice giving Pittsburgh the win and
sending the home town fans into a frenzy.  The game was a wild affair with
the lead changing hands 5 times.

The win went to Roy Face(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Don
Shaw(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.  By surrending 2 runs in 2/3 of
an inning his ERA jumped from 2.45 to 3.86.

Dennis Van Langen was in great spirits in his post-game interview.  Yet, when
asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Steve Dewing, feels right now - and it's not very good.  It's terrible when you
come up on the short end of one of these!'

In a dramatic ending, the Pittsburgh Pirates staged a comeback win over the
New York NL Mets in 14 innings by the count of 7 to 6.

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings.  Pittsburgh won the game in the
14th inning.  Jose Pagan led off and keyed the rally when he delivered a
one-base hit.  Bill Mazeroski was next and he slapped a single.  Manny Mota
struck out, unable to help the rally.  Jerry May was the next batter, but he
struck out.  Matty Alou stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the
bases.  Maury Wills kept the rally going and laced a single resulting in an
exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town
fans.  A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.
