Gents, I've been thinking for some time of starting a new Strat baseball league. Now that the new collective bargaining agreement is in place and we know there won't be a work stoppage for the next few years at least, I've decided to go ahead with it. This will be a 30-team current keeper league starting play next spring. You retro league guys who aren't interested in current leagues can stop reading at this point... LOL. Before posting an ad in Strat's classifieds and on some of the Strat bulletin boards, I wanted to recruit members from the leagues I'm in. It's important to have a solid core of managers and that's easier to achieve starting with folks I already know. I haven't fleshed out all the details of the league yet. I'd prefer to have the input of all the league members before doing that. But here's some of the highlights of the league: 1) As mentioned, a 30-team league with all the actual MLB franchises. I'd like to find fans of each major-league team and award the franchises that way. (So the White Sox are taken!) Might be a challenge for a couple of teams... 2) Each manager would retain a number of players (I'm thinking ten, but that's negotiable) from his franchise before the inaugural draft. This accomplishes a few things. It gives each team a little of the "feel" of it's actual major league counterpart, although that would eventually fade over time. It shortens the inaugural draft, which is always a lengthy process. And since the aim is to have each franchise run by someone who's a fan of that team, we'd all have many of our favorite players from our favorite teams. 3) After each team chooses its "keepers" the rest of the players are thrown into the draft pool and a serpentine draft is held to fill out 40-man rosters. The draft order would probably be in reverse order of finish of the actual teams, rather than being determined by lottery. 4) The league will use the actual "as played" schedule each season. Should make things interesting... doubleheaders, off days caused by rainouts... 5) There will be some sort of system to limit player usage. I'm looking at several systems, and I'm hoping to find a way that's simple to follow, simple to enforce, and reduces "Stratball" and "Budgetball" strategies as much as possible. (I believe in lofty goals!) I'll be looking for a LOT of input from league members in this area. 6) A "Use Him Or Lose Him" rule. This is a rule that's been used successfully in several retro leagues, and I think it can add a lot to a current league too. "UHOLH" establishes a minimum level of player usage... 80% seems to be the standard. Any player not used at least that much becomes a free agent and is tossed back into the draft pool the following year. The intent of the rule is to prevent stockpiling players. As a side benefit, it seems to increase trading. 7) Computer-only players would be used. With 30 teams we can't afford not to! However, they would only be available after rosters expand on September 1. Everything else as far as the league set-up goes is intentionally not nailed down yet. I really want the members of the league involved in how it is constructed. If you're interested, let me know. Include in your response what franchise you'd want, and whether or not you'd take another franchise if your preference isn't available. I'm looking forward to hearing from many of you... especially if you're Devil Rays fans! ;-) Steve Beck P.S. -- Sorry for the multiple mailing to those in more than one league with me. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
